Hillside Colorado Cottages Near Westcliffe

The half of a cottage we stayed in was quiet. Alas, the bed was loud, creaky and uncomfortable. The pillows were equally institutional in quality as the matress. The cottage structure itself is suffering foundation issues which results in a noticeable down slope grade. In addition the door frame to the bathroom door was/is misaligned so that the bathroom door will not close. Thus not a B&B as no breakfast is offerred. Overall a negative experience.

This was not our idea of a cottage. The accommodation we had was more of a concrete shed jammed into a small area of other concrete sheds - not what we would call a cottage in Britain. On the plus side, the shed was quiet – except for the air conditioning which was so loud as to be unusable. Our double bed was comfortable too and it was very retro to have a large fan keeping us cool. So that’s the good news. If you are thinking of self-catering don’t. The tiny, two burner electric hot plate is so small as to be unusable in any practical sense – cutting out when it reached a useable temperature. If you want to see Colorado dark night sky, or wonderful dawns or sunsets, be aware that the cottage is at the bottom of a valley so you won’t see much. Your “garden area” is tiny and sparse. It’s a low crime area which is just as well because the only door won’t lock. However the worst thing by far is the appalling, and I use that word advisedly, lack of communication. We were actually on our way to the property from Denver airport and still didn’t have an access code to get in. Despite having paid, we were looking for a hotel room just to have somewhere to stay! There is never an answer on the phone number. We were also sent an e-mail thanking us for having left the property when we were still there. Yes, it’s peaceful and quirky – but that’s it!

Relaxation I wanted a quiet stay for our last night in Colorado. I felt like we were in the middle of nowhere, but we had easy access to everything we needed. The peace was heaven, the natural beauty was amazing. I absolutely recommend this place, it's wonderful.
