I booked three rooms at the George Hotel, Henfield. I then received a call today from Mischa (two weeks prior to my wedding in Henfield) that my reservation had been cancelled due to 'renovation works'. No doubt, the owners and the Hotel know about the work months in hand. It means I have now had to book three alternative rooms at the Best Western Tollgate in Bramber for an extra £200. Thank you Best Western! My advice is not to stay here, even when the renovations are completed. They clearly don't have the customer at heart. If they had any decency, they would have told me about these months in advance. The writing is on the wall.... actions speak louder than words!

The room was pleasant enough and clean. Good towels but the bathroom was pokey. We received a text as we left a wedding service at lunchtime on the day of our arrival ( payment already taken!) telling us we would have to collect the key from another pub at the other end of the High Street. From the outside the Hotel/pub looks derelict..boarded up and everything in the window boxes dead. Outside is a mass of empty barrels. No breakfast and if it is Sunday no coffee shop open till 9. We got sandwiches at One Stop! The photos are totally misleading..the pretty courtyard with tables does not exist. Never again!

I stayed here with friends from 5-8th August, as we were attending Brighton pride. Air b&b were charging £1,000+ per night for 6 people, whereas we got 3 double rooms for £600 in total here! So saved a hell of a lot on that front. We weren’t told about the hotel renovation during our stay, so unfortunately the pub downstairs was closed- not a big deal, as there were a few down the same road. A couple of shops down the same road too. The rooms themselves although not massive, were comfy, clean and had hot showers. Downsides were the tea bags tasted old, and made a horrendous cup of tea (due to being open to the elements), no replacement hot chocolates during our stay, and no cleaning/bed making was done. Buses into Brighton were easy to get, however not possible to get one on the way back so cost £40 by taxi, and no buses running on Sundays.

Stayed here fo three nights for a family visit. I knew the hotel has a problem recruiting a chef, and the restaurant is not operating. I did not know the bar is also shut, as is the Reception! This means the keys need be collected from a pub along the road, meals need to be eaten elsewhere and its necessary to go to another pub for even a drink (even though there is a notice outside wrongly stating the bar opens 12 to 11pm). Without walking along the road for more, one toilet roll, and four little Sachets of milk for the 'tea & coffee facility' was to last two of us for three nights as no room service appears to be provided. Very strange, and a pity as the 'hotel' must be loosing out heavily. In terms of the room this was rather tired, but acceptable in a very old building. The bed was comfortable. I must mention the shower though. On the hottest day of the year I looked forward to a cool shower. However try as I might the water only went from hot to scalding - quite dangerous. I cannot comment on the staff as we only saw one person who admitted to being 'sort of staff' and provided a (ie. one!) toilet roll.

The room definitely did not match up to the picture on the website - scuffs on the wall and tired decor and a van permanently parked outside the window. The bedroom was on the car park. The hotel did not serve meals at all when we were there. The shower was good and it was clean but don’t expect atmosphere.

OK, the chap that greeted me was pleasant enough and checked me in through his iPad, but so far i have not had an invoice or an email which is a worry as i have to claim on expenses and need a VAT receipt. The room itself (The Tudor Room) was lovely and quaint even though the floorboards creaked with every step .... well, they WOULD, wouldn't they....it's really old, with exposed beams and a very high ceiling and with a bit of thought and not a lot of money it could easily go from a 3* to a 4*. The bed was really comfy and i slept really well. Thank you. The bathroom was a bit "tired" but everything worked so i am not going to criticise. It did what it said on the tin. Nice towels, tick! Biscuits, hot chocolate as well as tea and coffee. Tick. Free wi-fi. Tick. So i could do some work!! But what is this "No food and no breakfast" malarkey? Looking at the other reviews there is definitely mention of excellent food and breakfast, so have i just picked the wrong night to stay? Two out of three of the other pubs in the village do not serve food on a Monday night!! Goodness knows they must all stuff themselves on Sundays!! Please don't tell me that it was "chef's night off". I get it. They should not be working 7 nights a week, but this is a service industry whether you like it or not so surely there could be contingencies or an explanation to the weary traveller! The chap at the bar (very pleasant, as i said) suggested the cafe next door for breakfast but they don't open until 9.00 and this early bird is 50 miles away by then!! He didn't suggest anywhere in particular for an evening meal although i did say "So I assume that there are restaurants down the high street?" to which the answer was YES. No mention that 2 out of 3 also didn't serve food on Monday nights!! So thanks. If you wish to reply with some sort of explanation about the food, especially breakfast, then i could be back at some point. I cannot remember the last time that i stopped in a hotel that didn't offer breakfast of some sort, even if it was only of the continental and cold variety. The weird thing was that there seemed to be plenty of dining tables, but after my trip to the Excellent White Hart, i arrived back to the George and there was literally NOBODY in the bar. Quiet night, then!
