I just checked out of Winta Hotel and they’re running a black market currency exchange scam for tourists. If you don’t bring USD cash, they will charge you in Ethiopian Birr at an exchange rate of 100 Birr to 1 USD. This effectively doubles your cost. Very unethical and the only time I encountered this behavior during my 3 weeks in Ethiopia. Also, there was no working WiFi during our stay. And we got charged for an extra night that we didn’t stay due to our bags being missing at the Dire Dawa airport so we stayed in Dire Dawa for that night. There was no cancellation policy explained to us.

The hotel owner is very dishonest. They charge $350 USD or 35000 Birr (shuttle + hotel) - that is a 1:100 Birr exchange rate. Real time exchange rate is 1 USD to 53 Birr. It was either pay 350 USD or charge 35000 Birr on the credit card. We charged on credit card because our USD is limited - ended up paying $650 USD equivalent. I don’t recommend it unless you have everything prepaid ahead of time. Either way, scammy and dishonest. Although the hotel was clean and decent with hot water, the dishonesty of the hotel owner leaves a sour taste. Taking advantage of foreigners - tsk tsk.

We booked the room for one night by looking good rating on the tripadvisor and also comunicating to the owner. When the people arrived to the hotel they were told they don't have a booking. We tried to call the manager he swiched off his phone. This is very impolite and unprofetional.
