There is no better place to stay in Guanajuato than Casa Zuniga, a quirky but wonderful b&b. And quirky in the best possible sense. Built by Carmen and Rick (sadly, passed away last year), and now run and managed by their daughter, Ari, and her husband, Billy, this is one of the most remarkable and interesting places to stay. Here you’ll find a warm welcome and personal attention. Breakfast is family-style with all the guests sitting down at one large table with a good breakfast spread every morning. This is one of the most social places I’ve ever visited and Billy and Ari do their best to encourage these kind of connections. The b&b was lovingly built by Rick and Carmen, with many, many fun nooks and crannies to explore. Rick was a metal worker and there are some amazing pieces throughout. If Mexico is the land of murals, then Casa Zuniga is a great representative of this art form - there are also many murals to enjoy - so make sure you give yourself time to wander around the b&b to admire this unique setting. Located on the top of one of the hills overlooking the Centro, the views from here are incredible! You could just sit and watch the changing of the light from one of the terraces, whether your own room or the beautiful shared terrace. Each room is unique. We stayed in 3 different rooms, including one with a terrace. Our favorite room was Rene. We also stayed in Max, which is lovely and has an outside terrace. Although it didn’t have an outside terrace, the sitting area on a raised platform has a huge picture window and it’s a great place sit at any time of the day and enjoy a coffee (or anything else!) while admiring the views. Oh, yes, and there’s a swimming pool (covered), so don’t forget your swimsuit! No worries, getting there is easy. We arrived by taxi, which took us to the top of the hill beside Casa Zuniga (location beside El Pipila, the large stature of a local hero which overlooks the city). And from the Centro, which is below the b&b, you’ll take a short funicular ride to the top of the hill and it’s right next to Casa Zuniga. Guanajuato is an amazing city to visit - we loved it. And Casa Zuniga is THE place to stay. It’s magical.
