I I had spent a couple of months searching and exploring many hotel options in Guadalajara. I knew I wanted to find a place that felt warm, full of character, and true to its colonial charm. What I didn’t anticipate was the remarkable level of detail, heartfelt spirit, and genuine kindness shown by the entire staff. From the moment we arrived, it felt less like checking into a hotel and more like being welcomed with true graciousness. The level of hospitality went above and beyond what I could have hoped for. We came in as strangers and left as friends. The accommodations were truly lovely, and the history of the hotel could be felt in every detail. Each morning’s breakfast was not only delicious but also a wonderful opportunity to share a meal and connect with our newfound friends. La Perla was sublime. Looking forward to my next stay.

We recently spent several days in Guadalajara. Our trip was wonderfully augmented by choosing to stay at La Perla, a boutique hotel in a very safe and walkable authentic Mexican neighborhood with many culinary options. The hotel itself is small and wonderfully attended by Lars and his staff. Coffee was ready every morning at 7. We enjoyed it sitting on the veranda adjoining our room. Breakfasts were delicious (quite healthy) and accompanied by lively conversation. As were evenings with margaritas. If you’re contemplating a trip to Guadalajara do yourself a favor and stay at La Perla!

I recently stayed at La Perla for the fourth time. Each visit has been more enjoyable than the last, and I already have booked my next stay. Everything about La Perla is wonderful— the rooms, the breakfasts, and especially the people who manage it. They are helpful, knowledgeable, accommodating, kind, and best of all for me, hysterically funny. And the rooftop bar is pure joy. I’ve traveled to 90 countries on four continents, and without question, La Perla is the best place I’ve stayed.

Why would a solo female traveler want to stay at a boring hotel with no engagement when there is La Perla? La Perla Hotel Boutique is so much more than a bed and breakfast—it's an experience. From the moment I arrived, I felt as though I were visiting close friends. The hosts create a warm and welcoming environment that fosters camaraderie not only between guest and host, but also among fellow travelers. Conversations flowed easily during breakfast and happy hour, where guests shared tips, stories, and laughter over delicious food and drinks. Each day began with a lovely, home-cooked breakfast—both energizing and leisurely. It was the perfect time to plan the day with the hosts' thoughtful guidance. They provided personalized maps that pointed me toward hidden gems I wouldn’t have found on my own, enriching my time in Guadalajara beyond the typical tourist highlights. Evenings were equally special, as guests gathered for happy hour to unwind and trade stories of the day's adventures. My room was beautifully appointed, impeccably clean, and stocked with everything needed for a comfortable and restful stay - exactly like the photos on the website. The common spaces were equally impressive: a cozy library with a piano, a stylish reception area, and a rooftop bar and lounge with great views and ambiance. Located in Colonia Americana, La Perla offers the best of both worlds. The neighborhood is safe, vibrant, and full of character—think museums, bookshops, cafés, boutique shops, and fantastic restaurants—all within easy reach. The historical center and train station is just a short walk away, making this an ideal home base for exploring the city. La Perla isn't just a place to stay—it's a place to connect, reflect, and truly enjoy the spirit of Guadalajara. I left with great memories, new friendships, and every intention of returning. Many thanks to Lars, Guillermo, Antonio and Tere for a remarkable experience I will treasure.

We returned to La Perla in May for our second stay—this time while completing our temporary residency in Mexico—and once again, it exceeded expectations in every way. We’ve traveled extensively, and La Perla stands out not just for its charm and comfort, but for the people behind it. Lars and Memo are exceptional hosts—warm, welcoming, and deeply knowledgeable about Guadalajara. They provided exactly the kind of local insight and logistical guidance we needed to confidently explore the city’s diverse neighborhoods. Their hospitality feels more like being welcomed by old friends than staying at a hotel. In fact, after two visits, they feel like new family to us here in Mexico. The property itself is stunning: the rooftop is a perfect spot to unwind at sunset, the rooms are thoughtfully appointed and very comfortable, and the breakfasts are consistently delicious. The location is ideal—central, walkable, and safe—with easy access to restaurants, cafés, cultural attractions, and transit. La Perla is the kind of place we wholeheartedly recommend to anyone—whether you’re a first-time visitor, a digital nomad, or someone considering a longer-term stay in Guadalajara. It’s rare to find a place that balances beauty, warmth, and practicality this well. We're already planning our third stay.

I just left Guadalajara after my fifth visit in a little over two years and it was my fifth time staying at La Perla (see my prior reviews). This visit included my husband and three of our closest friends, all of whom have stayed at La Perla on numerous occasions themselves. It truly feels like home to me, which has everything to do with the amazing hospitality of the owners, Lars and Memo, and their wonderful staff. This was my first time in Guadalajara during the rainy season, something that I very much had wanted to experience. The city was a little quieter and the temperatures delightfully pleasant. There is nothing quite like sitting on the enclosed rooftop terrace at La Perla during an early evening rain, sipping a margarita and socializing with friends new and old. As always, it was tough to say goodbye but made easier by the fact that we know that we’ll be back. And pick up right where we left off with Lars, Memo, and staff.

I first visited Guadalajara in May of 2014. I returned again this month, for my 6th stay at La Perla. Why do I keep coming back? The charm of a small hotel that feels like a home, the excellent service, the location. I come alone, I bring friends to introduce them to the exciting city. As soon as you book your reservation, the service starts. You will receive confirmation emails and detailed directions on getting to the hotel. Each morning there is a healthy breakfast on the roof terrace and Lars and Memo will help you plan your day. Each evening, there is an opportunity to enjoy VERY reasonably priced margaritas on the roof terrace (the first night, the drinks are included). Lars and Memo will be very curious about what you did that day and how you enjoyed the city. They will also recommend restaurants. They are so involved because they care about their guests, and they want to know what you did AND didn't enjoy to help them make recommendations to future guests. The rooms are clean - and are cleaned daily by Tere when you're out and about. The hotel is located in Colonia Americana which is a short walk from the city center. I've walked at all hours to and from the Centro to the hotel and I've always felt safe.

The hotel was a beautiful old home in a wonderful and convenient location. The rooms were comfortable and clean. The mattress was firm and supportive. The bathroom was clean and modern and towels and sheets were clean. The hosts were super friendly, warm and informative. They provided us with maps to all the sites we wanted to see. They even had information about day trips if we were interested. They provided us with restaurant recommendations, which proved to be wonderful. There was coffee outside our room every morning at 7am and a wonderful breakfast around 9am on the rooftop terrace. The breakfast was enough to get us through to lunchtime. In the evening about 6:30 pm we went up to the rooftop terrace for two complimentary margaritas and wonderful discussions. All in all, we had a great time! We will return!

La Perla is a boutique hotel that excels in every area of hospitality. Lars, Guillermo, Antonio and Tere are friendly, welcoming and exceedingly professional. After a lovely breakfast the first day, we patiently put together a plan for the day. We were there two nights, and sitting with our hosts and fellow guests at cocktail hour, sipping margaritas on the rooftop deck was a joy. There are a lot of repeat guests and the vibe is wonderful. We're experienced travelers, we always look for boutique hotels and this is the best of the best.
