The hotel is in a great location on the town square within an easy walking distance to local shops. Atmosphere at the hotel was very pleasant and good service. Breakfast and dinner were both excellent. No bath in the en suite, a tiny shower and the grouting on the tiles needed re-done. If I were the AA I think I would have given it three stars

We stay at the Grant Arms in the Clock Tower Suite for 3 nights at the beginning of June. Friends from the USA stayed in a room just down the corridor. The suite had obviously been recently refurbished and the bathroom was really excellent and beautifully fitted out. The hot water was plentiful, but took an extraordinarily long time to run hot. Situated at the end of a long corridor the suite was wonderfully private with lovely views, however it was quite a struggle to get our luggage up and down the various sets of steps and doors from the lift as it was not on the same level as the suite. The food at the hotel was very good and being lactose intolerant I was particularly happy to see allergen information on the menus. Dinners were really good. Breakfasts were excellent for the first two mornings of our stay all made to order and delicious, but on the third morning it transformed into a buffet which was far inferior, presumably the hotel had more guests that day but it was a great shame, as even eating early morning at the start of the breakfast service, the food was tepid and not appetising. Although it was early June the weather was particularly cold and the staff were excellent at helping us when we found the heating inadequate and not on during the daytime and the early morning when we were up for an early start to our birding day. They provided a room heater which worked well and it remained in our suite for the duration of our stay, which was very much appreciated. As we were not on an organised birdwatching holiday we did not have access to their birding information and it would be nice for all guests to have access to information regarding birding sites, recent sightings etc. We had enquired about local birding guides and the hotel had provided us with a list of guides prior to our visit and we thoroughly enjoyed our birding day with Dave Slater. We hope to visit The Grant Arms again at a different time of year in the future for more birding. We really enjoyed our stay.
