Hotel Schatten

The hotel is clean, quiet and large rooms and nice big bathrooms. The staff speaks English and is courteous. We had booked a double room with balcony. We got a room on the first floor and the balcony was so not useful. Right outside our room, we overlooked into someone’s dirty terrace with stagnant water. It was so disgusting. The 2-3 buildings next to our balcony were so run down and dirty that we didn’t ever sit in the balcony. We kind of felt cheated. Another negative - there is no reception area to sit and chill. You either are in your room or you go out. In that sense it is not like a hotel, more like a bed and breakfast. The location is nice and everything else was good. I might come back to this hotel but will ensure I get a room on the second floor or not the same room that we got this time. You can hear church bells and you can hear cows going to graze at 7am .. it is a delight!

Lovely place to stay. Thoroughly recommend it. Very helpful staff. Superb breakfast. The complimentary bus pass was very useful. Within five minutes walk of several restaurants. Five minute bus ride to the Bahnhof. Five minute bus ride to the Wankbahn. We will return to the Schatten.

It would be hard to imagine a more pleasant and friendly hotel for exploring the Bavarian alps. Rooms are spacious, rear ones have balconies and views to the mountains, beds are comfortable, bathrooms spotless, location perfect, décor gemütlich ohne kitsch — everything is as it should be. The greatest asset is the friendly multilingual staff, who couldn’t be more welcoming or friendly. I leave you with a defining example: we didn’t take breakfast at the hotel, but a chambermaid noticed me walking down the hall with both hands full of take-out coffee. Far from being disgruntled that it was from elsewhere, she instantly darted ahead with a smile to open our room door with her master key. In short, you can’t go wrong staying here.

This hotel is lovely. The reception staff are very friendly and helpful. The location is great and views are excellent too. Rooms spacious. You get a free bus pass with hotel room which was nice touch. A couple of minor points that would improve overall experience: 1. The pillows in room offer no support and are not comfortable 2. Breakfast is great but a little pricey and three days added €84 to cost of stay 3. I wish they opened up the restaurant and bar in the evening. It is a wonderful space and I am sure it would be a great experience if they open it up again. Overall though a lovely stay in great location with very good staff

We were on our 50th Anniversary trip to Germany where we met and also honeymooned. Hotel Schatten's staff couldn't have been nicer. The breakfast was excellent and the location is excellent. Free bus tickets just added to the stay. If you have a 50th anniversary trip or any trip to Garmisch please consider this jem.
