Hotel Zugspitze

Fantastic hotel in great location. First class food with half board dinner a real bargain. Very helpful staff. Great resort town for our hikes.

This hotel is perfectly situated for exploring the local mountains. It is a 3 minute walk to the mountain railway from which you access the cable cars to Zugspitz and Alpspitz and a 1 minute walk to the centre of GP. Perfect location. Our room was fine, good shower and good coffee machine. The breakfast was fine. However there was one significant area of huge disappointment which was the restaurant / evening meal. The main reason we chose this hotel was because the restaurant was Michelin recommended. Well whoever was in the kitchen when Michelin went is not there now. We had hoped to eat there every night but we didn't return after the first meal. We sat at 8pm. We waited over 20 mins for a menu (had to ask for it). We had been sat for over an hour before our starters arrived. My fish and my friends roasted cauliflower thing were both overcooked. My starter fish came with with mash and a wet sauce which looked very unappealimg and which I left . We both ordered fish for our mains. Different fish, again overcooked, with a very sloppy potato puree and a foam that we specifically asked not be included but was. It looked like a plate of baby food and was so off putting to look at. We ate the overcooked fish and the greens and left the rest. By that time we were ready to leave but you are required to order 3 or 4 courses. We reluctantly ordered something with berries as it was fruit (it was 28 degrees C and so hot). It took nearly 30 mins to arrive at a time when there was hardly anyone left in the restaurant. We had had enough waiting after a long day of travelling and we got up to leave at 10pm. The desserts arrived just as we were leaving. The plate was once again liquid white the only solid food visible was some redcurrants poking out. We declined it and went to our rooms hungry. We were so disappointed. Do not be fooled by the pictures of beautiful food on the websites of the hotel and Michelin. Whoever cooked that is not there now. Maybe other options would have been better but in this heatwave we could not eat heavy meat based dishes. We just wanted something light and healthy and decent quality. It's a real shame because the breakfast was OK and the rest of the hotel aspects were fine. If the restaurant had lived up to the promise we would have given it 4 stars. We ate the other nights at the Italian place on the square Bottega Vita Lenta (which does great take away sandwiches too).

Highly recommend this lovely hotel. Short and easy walk from the train station and local attractions, and the town centre and its amenities. Staff were welcoming when we arrived, offering us warm cloths to freshen up. Family room was a great size with a balcony looking out over the mountains, and was very clean. The sofa bed felt firm to me but my children seemed to sleep well on it. The pool was bigger than expected and a touch cold at first, but the bubble pool was warmer, as was rhe steam room. Our meals at the hotel were delicious and filling. All the staff we met were extremely polite and friendly. Overall,we had a great stay. We felt welcomed, safw and at ease. My children are already asking when we can return!
