Property Description
A beautiful, hand crafted log cabin, fully outfitted, next to an Alaskan historic site of rich significance & space. Can accomodate large groups (4 bedrooms and loft) or small. Each log in this cabin was carefully downed, limbed, crafted, notched, and fitted by a long time homesteader, Atz Kilcher. Sitting above stunning scenery, the cabin provides modern amenities in a rustic setting. A mix of antique furniture with modern and log style furniture in the kitchen, living room and downstairs bedrooms. Bamboo kitchen flooring is a treat and the cabin has been lovingly maintained (new downstairs shower, new laundry & high end machines, new tiling and carpeting throughout). We have provided a wood stove with a custom built rock hearth for ambience, but has upstairs and downstairs oil heat for convenience. The large master bedroom overlooks a view you will never forget (think Kachemak Bay, glaciers, mountains, pink and purple sunsets and, admittedly more rarely, the aurora borealis), and there is a small bedroom right next door if you have a youngster you prefer to keep close, and two window nooks that even adults sleep in. The older kids or adult guests will enjoy the two bedrooms on the lowest level. Sited on a 50 acre parcel next to a homestead where eight children of an early State Senator and writer grew up in an austere 400 square foot homesteaders cabin. Easy access to the Kilcher Family Homestead provides over 600 acres to hike in if you desire along with access to the beach via one of only two beach access sites outside of Homer on the near side of McNeil Canyon. During the summer the Kilcher Homestead Living Museum offers tours of the Homestead cabin built by Ruth and Yule as well as self guided tours/hike to the beach (donation/contribution varies). There is a meadow/pasture above the house that is fun to explore. There are also meadows, and other interesting land features surrounding the cabin. It is not unusual to see moose, black bear (shy ones), porcupines, sandhill cranes, eagles, hawks, song birds, marmots, seals and other wild life on the Kilcher Homestead. Next to the Kilcher homestead, there is also a small archive nearby for the Ruth Kilcher Mariott Archives, where I have an archive intern working part time. The intern loves in a small cabin screened from view by alder bushes. Of note this property is part of a working homestead so there may be tractors and ATV's at work, but we will coordinate with you when this occurs in the event you are enjoying the house and not out fishing or sight seeing! Trip of a lifetime! We all were amazed at the view as we drove in! It is breathtaking! We had a moose run through the property was one of the highlights! The master bedroom has a view that’s unbelievable. Everything about the property was exceptional. Catkin was the best hostess and did a lot of extras for us. Thank you!

We had a lovely stay here. We felt very welcomed by our host, Catkin, and all fell in love with the gorgeous views and the expansive property. The master bedroom is amazing and our kids loved having their own little space downstairs. The kitchen was well-supplied and it had a great living room where all 8 of us were able to relax and enjoy our time together.

Such a beautiful place! This place is just breathtaking! We just fell in love with it. Perfect for families, lots of room to spread out. Host very communicative, and cool to come by to tell family stories. We thoroughly enjoyed being on the homestead. The mama moose and baby in the yard was a definite bonus!Could use some more darkening curtains in master suite as the 18 hours of sun was hard to get rest in. Thanks for a memorable stay.

Wonderful Stay! The location is perfect. The cabin is comfortable. What really made it even more special is how kind and accommodating Catkin was for our group. We were three dads taking our 17 year old sons fishing and exploring Alaska. Catkin not only shared her cabin with us but also some of her story. Don’t miss watching the DVD at the cabin showing the early years of the homestead. So much history. We also enjoyed the walk down to the beach and back. The only recommendation I make is whoever is staying in the master bedroom might want to take along an eye mask since the room with its expansive windows overlooking the bay and the glacier do not (nor should they) have window treatments. It doesn’t get very dark in that one room until around 1:30-2:00 am. I had no problem sleeping. But someone might find it harder to fall asleep with so much light coming in the room. Catkin thank you so much for your hospitality. I hope I can come back again soon!

We loved the view! We loved our stay at Eagles rest! We've stayed with Catkin before and always enjoy our time. The home is beautiful & the view is amazing. We saw moose in our backyard & sandhill cranes in the front yard. This is our favorite place to stay in Alaska & we will be back again! Highly recommend!
