Le Grand Hotel des Bains & Spa - Bretagne

We last stayed here some 10 years ago in a third floor room at the back. It was cramped (the bathroom even more so) and despite the hotel's boast that it overlooked the church it really overlooked the hotel's industrial industrial infrastructure. It was, frankly, a bit grim. This time we went for a second floor room, at the front, with a balcony. It was an improvement but the room itself was still relatively small, but the bathroom was better. The room (good views over the bay and the hotel's grounds) had a nice comfy bed with nice comfy pillows, a small table and chair, flat-screen TV and a wardrobe with drawer space. The balcony had a very small table and two chairs and was just big enough to sit on and read (but perhaps not for long). The bathroom was fine with lovely towels and the usual facilities (and a shower over the bath). Plenty of hot water. Housekeeping is fine. The hotel is stylish and comfortable with a nice lounge/bar and plenty of soft sofas. The grounds are extensive and extend to the sea and there are loungers and chairs and tables to use when the weather permits. There's also a (very) small private beach. The restaurant (where you take breakfast) is spacious, airy and has good views over the sea. Breakfast is plentiful and varied and will accommodate most if not all tastes. Eggs (scrambled, fried and poached) are cooked to order. The restaurant is good and not overly pricey given the hotel's image. There are two EV charging points which are (gasp!) not charged for. But you need to bring your car's charging cable. The swimming pool is large with comfortable surrounds. A hamman and sauna are there to use with the usual array of beauty treatments. So far then so good. Any negatives? Well although the hamman can seat six you have to be fairly friendly with folk if you do. Five is a better fit. The sauna seats only two. The grounds could do with a bit more maintenance. Although there is ample storage space in the bedroom for a week's stay if you put your suitcase in the wardrobe (there's no other place for it) the available space is reduced. The staff are welcoming and friendly (as you'd expect) but service at meal-times can be a little disorganised. We found one male member of staff rude, ignorant and arrogant but he was an exception. The main problem was that the staff (with the odd exception) were distant and you (us) were treated as a commodity rather than a welcome and wanted visitor. (Our yardstick is the staff at the Hotel Brittany in Roscoff who are exceptionally good.) Overall then it's not a bad hotel: stylish, comfortable with a high standard of cuisine. But it suffers from being a Belle Epoch building converted to meet the demands of the 21st century (the head of our bath was in an alcove due to design constraints). The staff were fine but could be better. Would we return? Yes. But we might try a first floor front room next.

The setting is idyllic. From the outside, the architecture blends perfectly with the traditional building style. Inside, the modern vibe is appropriately beach front. There are good (if not exceptional) bistro and gourmet restaurants on site. The price point is reasonable. Perhaps because I spend 70 or more nights in mostly 4 star hotels each year, and have done so for decades, I am a bit attuned to what makes a traveler comfortable and what does the opposite. Our room here was spacious, and on some points rather comfortable, i.e. bed, desk, some of the lighting. But in other respects, there were some very annoying flaws. Having a narrow water closet, with an in closing door with 2 inch clearance to the end of the toilet is stupid, unless you are catering to two dimensional clients. There is a fairly large enclosed shower. The door opens outward, blocks the towel rack, and most significantly, there is a 10 inch drop to the bathroom floor. At best, this is odd, and at worst,a real safety hazard. There would be plenty of room to put a hook at the far end of the shower for a towel. Otherwise, are you supposed to hand one on the door knob? A shower gel bottle with a tendency to get stuck. A bright light near the sink, a good idea. Placing it on one side, so the other side is in perpetual shadow, not so smart. With the spacious floor space, you have two large teardrop chairs really low to the floor. So low, you might as well sit on the floor. Getting in and out of the them is excruciating unless you regularly practice yoga, and not everyone does. You have the usual expected niceties; flat screen television (although no English or other ”foreign” language channels. A large armoire, with those we don't trust you hangars you have to pull out of the sockets. A coffee maker, safe, minibar. A better than average breakfast in the bistro, and at 24 Euros per person, that might be expected. Plenty of free parking if the attractions across the street are not at capacity. A small underground garage for hotel guests too. So, a rather good hotel that could be better.

We loved our one night stay! Super-comfortable twin room with huge shower, coffee machine and fridge, pool and sauna. Public areas chic and comfortable. Staff helpful and attentive. Swift action when our bathroom tap malfunctioned resolving the problem quickly. Free luggage storage after our stay so we could explore the city before our train to Rennes. Would definitely stay again!

So we returned for perhaps our 4th stay, still satisfied with the hotel and staff. This time we decided to go for a suite with seperate lounge area and balcony. This was great as it is nice to sit in your bedroom and relax without having to rest on the bed. We did have one issue with the bedroom this time time, believe it or not the bed was to big!!!! Not for us but for the room we both felt that it was a squeeze in the room,I had to practically fight with the curtains to get in and out of bed.The room number by the way is 217,and other suites are available. Also if staying for a short period and you want to take advantage of the spa ask first to make sure all the facilities are open we found that the sauna was closed which made the steam room a bit crowded at times. Overall we will go back.

The hotel is perfect, laughterful and professional staff. Breakfast is very complete and extensive. The neighborhood and the hotel are quiet with free private parking. (But 1 only small bottle of water ”Cristaline” at the average cost of 0.18€ in large surface for 2 ?) In the end, Bon séjour...

The rooms are large enough and clean We had room No. 1012 with sea view and balcony. The view is restricted by the roof of the dining room. You should book 2 or higher floors but the roof is always in front of the room. The spa is not especially but ok. Eating was good but there are only 2 menus to choose. Prices in the restaurant are raised and the restaurant works rather like in a large room and offers little ambience. Breakfast OK but nothing special more average. Location to the beach 50 m. And to the center 2 km For 1-2 Nights OK
