Had a lovely two night stay at The Parsonage Hotel. Certain areas of the hotel could do with a ‘lick of paint’. The food at the Fat Abbot was really good. The pool an added bonus. Bus stop outside to York centre.

The actual room is seriously different from the photos. The room is clean and has no odor, but the room and bathroom in the picture are not what they actually look like. If I knew this would happen, I would not have booked it.

This is an old castle hotel with beautiful interiors, a sense of history, gardens in the yard, and sika deer and rabbits. The restaurant meal was well done!

Not the best. Tired decor throughout (gaffa tape over carpet etc), Bedrooms could do with updating. Uncomfy beds and old furniture. Reception staff were quite abrupt and not especially welcoming. There was an issue at check in with our booking about the number of occupants in the room. We were convinced we had provided the right information at the time of booking, but we were just presented with a credit card terminal with a pre populated £25 to tap the card against - without the offer of any investigation into the issue (as if an assumption the hotel was completely right and couldn't possibly be in the wrong). That set the stay off on the wrong tone. If they polish up the little things they could cover over the cracks quite well. The property would welcome a good refurb throughout. It's a nice property from the exterior and has plenty of potential to be something really nice.

It is always a bit of a gamble booking hotels on line. There are so many different criteria to take into account. However, my sister and I share a birthday and we decided to hold a family party in Yorkshire. My sister looked on line and we liked the look of the facilities at the Parsonage. She went ahead and booked for twenty family members. We stayed bed and breakfast, and also held the birthday party in the Lascelles room with a very tasty cold buffet, salads and desserts, and a good variety of pre-ordered drinks including wine and beer on each table. Service was excellent and friendly. They provided plates and cutlery for two large birthday cakes that had been brought in by the family. The Parsonage provided a very enjoyable evening for all of us. The bedrooms are comfortable with good efficient bathrooms. the weather was very hot and fans are provided. Breakfast is a well stocked buffet with the usual cooked items and the coffee is good! Because the weather was extremely warm, The Fat Abbott was able to help us avoid dehydration with a good selection of beers and cold drinks! Four of us stayed three nights. On the other two nights we ate at Sangthai Restaurant, which is just on the other side of the church next door. We had two good Thai style dinners here. Some people also used the 415 bus service into York from the stop outside the hotel. We all enjoyed our stay at The Parsonage.

I rarely leave bad reviews but after 4 attempts to email the hotel to actually make a group booking and 2 phone calls with no answer I’ve given up. I’ve done at least 2 spa overnight stays a year for the last 20 years ( apart from covid) and I have never had to contact a hotel more than once for information and booking details. Poor communication so on that note it’s put me off booking for a group of 14 ladies.
