General Palmer Hotel

Really great ambiance and location! Friendly staff and accommodating hours for breakfast and checkout.

First impression was of an elegant historic hotel. Free parking. Check in friendly and easy. We booked a queen suite which was on the 3rd floor. We took the elevator to our room and this is where we were uncomfortable. The elevator is vintage and very small in our opinion. Two people with carry-on bags and it was a tight fit. This could be a problem for guests with claustrophobia (I am borderline). The alternative was 3 flights of stairs to the 3rd floor. Our room was well appointed in a pleasant Victorian style and very clean. The TV was a large flat screen, and free WiFi worked well. The bed was comfortable. The suite had a wet bar with refrigerator and coffee maker, and a sofa with a table and two chairs. Unfortunately in our opinion, the sofa was well used and broken down to the point that it was difficult to get up from. The bathroom was clean, but the jacuzzi type tub seemed quite dated, and difficult for us to enter and exit to take a shower. In our opinion, guests need to be very careful as we found it would be easy to slip entering or exiting the tub. The hotel had a nice complimentary breakfast… sausage gravy was very good, along with biscuits, eggs, rolls and juices. Lots of hot coffee and teas available in the lobby. The location on Main Street in Durango was excellent and right next door to the Durango Silverton train depot.

Upon arrival, bombarded with pride flags, even in our room. Person (a guy but nametag was a girls name) refused to help lift bags (maybe because the shoes he wore did not accommodate such work). Check in was extremely slow process, due to new hires I assume. Carpet stained and beds very uncomfortable. Love the history, but it does not match with the new-age agenda they put in your face.

This was the nicest hotel I stayed at during a two week road trip to the Southwest. I arrived a little early thinking I would just park my car and walk around town but they had a room available. It met all my requests. A lovely room on the third floor of the main building which gave me lots of opportunity to use the oldest elevator still in operation in Colorado. The staff were excellent and service oriented. Breakfast was quite good. Coffee/Tea was available on each floor and all day in the lobby. I would highly recommend staying here.

Great hotel and beautiful. Great parking for larger vehicles. We had a 1 ton dually.
