Beautiful building high up overlooking the Clyde
Our room was huge with very comfortable beds
We ate in the restaurant and the food was very good and hot same with the breakfast buffet
Lots of choice and quality produce
Friendly staff
Have stayed here many times but it has improved since bespoke hotels took it over

We had a sea view room which had a great view, but the windows were so dirty and cobwebs in the corners that it actually spoiled that for us. The staff and service they provided was excellent, but however I expected a wider variety of meals but the menu was very limited. It was nice to sit at the tables provided outside when having drinks, but again the metal railings at the tables had a lot of chipped and flaked paint and made the hotel look rather run down. The dining rooms and all the seating areas with lovely leather chairs was very nice on the ground floor, but moving up the stairs there was black tape holding the red tartan carpet together, our room actually had small nails holding the wallpaper on the walls. It all looked great online ,but close up it was rather tired.

The hotel is in an excellent location but is rather dated. The room was a decent size with good storage, but I could not open a window and it was very hot, also the duvets are winter duvets and, again, were far too hot for mid summer. On the first evening there was no hot water for a shower and reception advised we may have had to run the water for at least 5 minutes!!

Charming old hotel with splendid view over the harbour. Room had a classic yet not dated appearance, bathroom though seemed a little behind the times. All in all great value for money

We stayed here for three nights. Have to say the hotel is very dated and the bathrooms even more dated, the lovely avocado green bath and toilet with a cream toilet seat in all three rooms. We opted for sea view rooms which had a good decent view, but very small. Felt the hotel needed a good deep clean. Stains on carpets, stairs needed hovering etc. Rooms only made up if you remember to put the sign out. Staff all friendly but not a great standard. Ate in the ghotel two nights, not able to have a coffee after our meal as the coffee machine was away from repair and in the words of the waitress ‘it had been condemned as a health hazard’ yet two decent coffee machines working in the breakfast room, but they were not allowed to use them in the evening ! Food ok, nothing special but nothing to really complain about either. Breakfast plentiful but buffet style, so lukewarm at best. Some roof renovations going on, so what little car parking they was, is taken up with vans and scaffolding but there is road side parking. The lift does have a hotel but you need to lug your cases up the stairs at the front of the hotel first to get to it. Think in it’s hey day it would have been a very grand hotel, but certainly showing signs of being run down now. Stay was fine, beds comfortable but rooms above the smoking area and you do hear people coughing and spluttering below and the smell of smoke. If we came back to Bute, we would perhaps try somewhere else.

We visit Rothesay every year and always make a point of having a meal and a few drinks in the Glenburn, due to the good food and fabulous views, however on this visit we were very disappointed. What has happened to your menu? It was very sparse, so much so that 2 of our party opted for just starters as nothing on the mains appealed to them. If we hadn’t pre-booked and walked from town, we would have changed our minds and gone elsewhere. Next visit we will check the menu before booking. Hopefully it will be as good as it used to be. The staff were good as always.

This magnificent building reminds me of a very similar Victorian/Edwardian arhitectural masterpiece in Harrogate appropriately named The Majestic Hotel. The Glenburn Hotel however has the added bonus of an unrivalled seaview from an elevated location. Never have we enjoyed an overnight stay more than here: the Staff were all very helpful and justifiably proud of their hotel; our splendid double, seaview bedroom was spotlessly clean, (Room 109 if you're thinking of booking!) ; the view from the outside, covered terrace unrivalled and the food was tasty and varied. Breakfast choice and presentation in the cavernous dining room was most impressive: (whilst it's hard to gild the lily, we both thought that it would be better to keep the food on the buffet hot by using dry, electric elements rather than the steamers currently used. The mushrooms tend to become waterlogged and the bacon and sausages lose their traditional crispness if exposed to steam. Just a tiny niggle however.) I think it was the famous Dr. Johnson who once remarked: 'If you want to eat well in England, then eat 3 breakfasts a day' . Maybe his travels didn't include Scotland! 🏴 If we could award 6 stars we would have no hesitation in doing so. The only disappointment with this oak-panelled gem is that we failed to meet Queen Victoria or Edward VII on the regal and opulent grand staircase, nor did we encounter any nocturnal 'White Ladies on those endless, newly tartan-carpeted corridors! It's the kind of place I would gladly haunt when I get 'promoted'! But we plan to return in mortal guise well before then, (dv). Our sincere thanks to all the staff who work so hard to make visits to The Glenburn Hotel so very memorable. It's very encouraging to see that such high standards are being maintained in the otherwise dismally run-down town of Rothesay itself, once such a hugely popular holiday resort, but now only showing rare hints of its faded grandeur.
