Battlefields Country Lodge

The first room we were given was pretty awful. Felt cold, damp and resembled a scout camp dorm. I complained and we were moved to a round house room. This was much better, recently renovated, lovely, comfy, clean bed, nicely appointed bathroom. However, the floor was extremely slippy in the bathroom, water went all over the floor from the walk in shower. The shower was very lack luster. There was nowhere to put anything in the bathroom, so wash bags etc had to go on the floor. Severe lack of towel rails too. Every time you used any toilet roll, the roll fell on the floor; (we think the holder was put on upside down!). The room had no view, only one window, outside was just concrete and other round houses. Our evening buffet meal was pretty awful. Our breakfast even worse. Some money has obviously been spent on the place, but the renovations have not been executed that well. 2 guests in a renovated room had no hot water or heating and there was no-one on site to fix it for them overnight. The chairs in the restaurant were enormous, hard to manoeuvre and being cream, won't stay looking clean for long. Not our favourite place on our tour I'm afraid.

We stayed at this hotel as part of a tour so not selected by ourselves. Rooms were quiet and beds comfortable. Good location for the Battlefields. Breakfast was limited but ok. Hot water provided for DIY instant coffee or tea. Limited choice for evening meal and buffet service. Omelettes were made on request as an alternative. Swimming pool out of action. We felt that it met our needs whilst there but clearly there is potential for this hotel to improve its ratings.

This lodge was part of a tour so not selected by ourselves. Had already read online about the negatives. It was much better than expected. Lovely grounds. Housekeeping needed seen too. The shower was badly in need of a good clean and grouted. Food was ok, just needed warm plates for the hot stuff. Drink was cheap. Wonder if they had issues with staffing as it was a bit out of the way. Did not deter from the trip

Stayed here on a Riviera tour to SA and this was near to the Zulu battlefields. The hotel was quite average and the food quality was a little poor. The hotel is very remote and having just changed ownership think more effort needs to be made by the new owner to motivate the staff who really didn’t have any enthusiasm. I hope things can be turned round as the place could be so much better with just a bit more effort. As Brits we are a pretty resilient bunch and an issue with the water didn’t cause too much hassle. I have my fingers crossed that things can only get better. It didn’t spoil the trip at all though

We spend a couple of nights at the lodge to explore the surrounding battlefields. The rooms are spacious and well equipped The bar/ dining room is a bit cold but the service makes up for it. Nice food. The place is aimed at tour groups and run very efficiently.

Loved the quirkiness of the Battlefields Hotel, it's a huge place and whilst we were there additional building was going on ready for the races in July. Stayed for 2 nights as had booked a Battlefields Tour. Some of the reviews less than favourable and parts of the hotel grounds needed a spruce up (especially the swimming pool) but the room was absolutely fine , the air conditioning the quietest in all the trip, no problem with load shedding as clearly had back up generator. On both evenings we had a couple of drinks before eating the restaurant area is large and being mid week wasn't very busy. Excellent service from the bar man and the drinks were very cheap. On the first evening we were offered a menu and the food we opted for was put on a plate , on the second evening it was a buffet which was better as could choose the amounts. Very security conscious as driving licence checked on arrival .
