Hostel du Nord

The hostel is terrific. Excellent accommodations (it's a HOSTEL, not a HOTEL), clean, with a genuine emphasis on courtesy (quiet and privacy) of your hostel-mates. Very welcoming - couldn't be more so. If you're uptight, need some to wipe your nose and escort you to your private bunk with YOUR name on it, there are other places to go in Duluth. If you're looking for a quiet, clean, safe and very friendly place to lay your head - this is it. One caveat is parking. If you have a canoe on your rig before an up-north trip, ask about paid parking across the street. It's a downtown neighborhood, with an active downtown crowd. I left my canoe at my son's place in Duluth.

Annex First time in the Annex and I will never start there again. Building was VERY cold and it was even cold outside. a few of the stairs were loose and I stumbled on it the first time I ascended the stairs. Main floor bathroom was poorly done. Little privacy in the shower or first stall. Light was poor. No mirror over the outer sink. Lower bath fan was so loud you could not think. Mirror was off to the side and made it difficult to shave with. Sink would not drain, and was disgusting. I have stayed at this property before in the main building and it was excellent.

Was very sketchy, I left because I did not feel safe. No privacy at all. Bathroom is all shared by the same people.

The staff was friendly and welcoming. The lounge area was nice. There were lockers available for our luggage. The parking lot was a little dark behind the Hostel where we parked. Communal bathroom kept clean. Good price.

When I arrived the girl who checked us in was any bring but accommodating. Online it said the property would have somewhere to lock your belongings. Upon arrival there was a locker but no key. We asked the girl at the front desk and she said she had “no clue”. We walked out and decided we decided we would be staying elseware for the night.i went back in and told the girl that we would like to cancel unless we could find a key to lock our stuff up she finished making her noodles in the kitchen while I waited for for 5-10 minutes for her to cancel our 1 night stay. She said she canceled it but I have not yet received a refund. Was excited for a new United States hostel experience especially since it looked so cozy and in a great walking location on the website but in the end it put a damper on our night as we had to make other arrangements and spend extra money without even a partial refund. Will not be back and will not recommend.
