Breakfast times are over to early, checking out should be at least 12 noon especially at weekends. Room quite comfortable, staff very nice. Overall the Abbey is a great hotel and location but would need a revamp as the corridors leading to bedrooms are a bit shabby .

My husband and I spent two days in the Abbey Hotel last week. Check-in was quick, efficient and friendly. We were given an upgrade and our room looked out on to the river. It was spacious and quiet with a good walk-in shower. Housekeeping was passable but when my husband spilled some water on the bathroom floor and went to wipe it, the tissue he used was black with dirt. We did not have dinner in the restaurant but did have breakfast which was very basic. On the first morning there were a few bowls of fruit - tinned grapefruit, prunes and mixed diced fresh fruit. But on the second morning the bowl of fresh fruit wasn’t there. I think it might have been all used but not replenished. The hot food was served by a girl who very obviously didn’t want to be there, she looked so bored and unsmiling. She made toast when she wasn’t serving anyone but when the bread was toasted she put it on a plate and left it there to go cold. I have never seen this in any other hotel either at home or abroad. There needs to be someone in charge of the breakfast restaurant to see that items are replenished and served properly. We enjoyed being in Donegal town and the hotel is right in the middle of it which is very handy. Evening entertainment in the bar was enjoyable with plenty of good musicians and there seems to be plenty of weekends available for those who like Country & Western music and dancing but when we return to Donegal we will be staying somewhere else. If you choose this hotel, there are plenty of cafes/restaurants near by which serve excellent breakfasts and I’d advise you to book room only.

Myself and a group of eleven tour guides from Dublin stayed there on the weekend of the 18th of July. Our overall stay was good, except the heating was on in our room 121 was on all evening, room very warm. We had booked the bar estaurant for 6.30 for dinner. Food was really nice. The big problem was the service. A very big hen party was also booked in for the same time. Most of the service went to them. The staff appeared to give them first priority. Drinks. Cocktails. Champagne, and the food was flying by our table. We were having different very young undertrained staff attend our table. The one person that was holding everything together was a lady I think her name was Izzy, the bar manager who was from Dublin, don't know his name. Who we didn't see most of the night. Some of our group didn't want desserts or coffee's, they wanted to go and explore the town, so they started to go up to pay for their meals individually. All they had was dinner, no drinks or starter's, very straight forward. Well the manager arrived on the scene as one of our group was paying for his meal at the till. He was shocked at the way he spoke to Izzy. Plus the language he used to berate her for taking for the meals individually. They should have mentioned at the beginning that the bill could not be paid for individually. I'm a woman in my 60s, I've worked and owned restaurants throughout my life, Abbey hotel train your staff properly, I do understand that the hen parties bring big business, we waited 40 minutes to have a menu and desserts served. I would stay there again. But certainly wouldn't eat at the bar restaurant, would go out for dinner in the town. Where I'm sure service would be better.

We stayed at the Abbey June 13th and 14th.We went for the music weekend. From the time we checked in till we checked out we had the most amazing time. The staff could literally not do enough for us.For instance our room felt a little chilly so I phoned down and asked if I could turn the radiator on. The lady at the desk apologized and said the heating wasn’t on. I told her that was fine. 10 Minutes later an employee arrived with a portable heater. The room was lovely very spacious and clean. The breakfast was delicious. Best soda bread I’ve ever tasted. We definitely if we are back in Ireland would stay there again

We arrived at the Abbey on a rainy afternoon and were welcomed by a friendly receptionist. After 2 room changes due to separate issues, the ladies at the front desk stayed calm and welcoming. We ended up in beautiful and quiet room 218 with a view of the river. The room and bathroom were clean and the bed very comfortable. After a restful night we headed to the breakfast which was delicious and plentiful. The service at the hotel, the bar and the restaurant was always courteous and helpful. During our 5-night stay, even with the busy country music weekend, the staff was always polite and ready to address any questions. We ate once at the bar restaurant and once at the marketplace and enjoyed the food in both places. If ever again in this area we would certainly stay at the Abbey hotel.

Our visit to The Abby Hotel in Donegal was excellent. We were able to stay in the Victoria Suite which was very beautifully decorated and spacious. Abby helped us at the front desk. Excellent customer service! Highly recommend this hotel!!

Went to Donegal to visit family and this hotel was recommended. We had a triple which had plenty of room for 3 adults. Room came with breakfast each morning and which was a typical Irish. Food was very good and I was surprised to see gluten free options as well as milk alternatives(soy, almond and oat).
