We arrived about 4pm, exhausted after a fun filled day of finding all the trolls! The front desk staff was not very friendly. She asked for my credit card for payment. I told her I booked over the phone and my credit card had already been charged. I handed her the papers I had printed in case something like this happened since I read previous reviews. She told she didn't need to see any papers, she can see what's on the screen, but needed my credit card on file anyways. She checked us in, and gave us our room cards. She started to walk away and I asked her where our room was located and the best place to park in the parking lot. Her answers were very short, I felt like she had no time for us..... I chalked it up to everyone has an off day, but then I another staff as we were leaving for dinner, I said hello and she gave us a half smile, no words, I thought was rude and now the next day, a different staff, was not very friendly to an older couple. Not impressed. But, the man at the front desk in the morning about 8:30 was very friendly. He was very nice and polite. Thank You! The room was not the cleanest, the sink was still dirty, ice bucket was gross. Less than half a roll of toilet paper was left, I took that off immediately and put the new roll on. The thermostat had dirty fingerprints on them. The room took awhile to reach thermostat temperature after adjusting it. The hot tub was CLOSED, which was very disappointing, especially after a day of hiking multiple trails. The breakfast was decent. Coffee was very good!

Be careful checking in. I reserved my reservation through Priceline and paid in advance. While checking in I gave my card for incidentals like normal. Once given back I got the notification that I was charged a second time by the hotel for the room. I instantly brought it up and got a response saying “We didn’t receive the funds from them.” Argued I have the confirmation right here. Was told the manger would have to deal with it tomorrow. It’s been 3 days and I’ve yet to hear from the manager. They had my reservation but not the charge and didn’t bother to say anything about the fact till after I was charged. And now silence. Communication is key.

Hopefully they will get a new plumber. The one they have on contract never showed to fix the hot water for the duration of my stay.

I've stayed at both locations owned by this group (Hawley & Detroit Lakes), and am apparently a slow learner. Their Hawley location's pool was always in disrepair - last I heard the ceiling collapsed, but their staff was always friendly and welcoming so I let it go. Which brought me to their Detroit Lakes location on May 29th when I was too tired to continue to my intended destination in Brainerd. I had already left another local hotel after deciding the presence of a security guard, and their discussing a current customer, was more drama than I wanted. Upon arriving, the night clerk failed to inform me they "Have no gas". I should've left then, but I was having trouble staying awake and thought the issue would be resolved by morning - I was very wrong! Upon entering my room, it was very cold. The thermostat was set at 68, but the AC was still running full blast. I turned it up to 72 and observed it had switched to heat, then tried taking a shower. This is when I discovered there was no hot water. I picked up the room phone to call the front desk and it was dead. Using my cell phone, I called the hotel's main line to speak to the clerk who'd just checked me in moments earlier, and told him about the lack of hot water. His response was appalling; "Oh yeah, that was on a note here from earlier. We have no gas." I was upset, but too exhausted to leave. After trying to sleep for 2 hours, I finally got smart and stole all the bedding off my second bed, and finally was warm enough to catch some Z's. At 9:30, my room was still a chilly 70 (I was in Dallas, TX, the day before), and there was still no hot water. As I made my way towards the "free" breakfast, I stopped at the front desk to inform them there still was no hot water, and I wanted to speak with the manager about a discount. They made a call, and I went across the lobby, in plain sight of the front desk, to eat my pre-made pre-packaged eggs & sausage. It certainly wouldn't pass muster on "Worst Cooks", as an Army vet, I've survived on worse, but wasn't charged $100 for it. About that manager... I spent about 15 minutes at that table. No manager. I informed the front desk I was leaving. Still, no manager. It's been a week. Still no manager! They're either afraid of confrontation, or just don't care. I replied to their emailed request for a review, I'm writing this now after completing that one, just as their "Constant Contact" likely is instructed. I'm not sure they really wanted my true experience, but they got it and now so have you. I'll be seeking a chargeback. I only made it to Des Moines on the 29th and it cost me another hotel stay from not getting my rest in Detroit Lakes. That also cost me another $100, but it was a far better experience. Do not stay here.

Do not stay here front desk staff is unprofessional and untrained, they charged my card three times and my husbands card. Breakfast is not stocked or hot. The appearance of the front desk staff is very unprofessional I was trying to figure out if they worked there or if they were quest. Definitely not worth the money. Room temperature was either hot or cold not happy medium. The beds are all worn out and not comfortable the pillows were flat.

This AmericInn is in the perfect location for being in a small town! The rooms are clean and quiet. The beds are comfortable. When entering the main lobby, it is warm and welcoming. Conner is excellent on the evening shift when I arrived, very personable and funny! The breakfast bar offers lots of different items; however, the biscuits were hard, like hockey pucks and did not absorb when the sausage gravy was smothered over them. I will avoid the biscuits but will continue to make this my main place to stay with multiple trips to this area.

A medical necessity took us to Detroit Lakes as a place to stay to be readily available to leave early for surgery. Very efficient staff, quiet room and great early breakfast for those that could eat. {Our surgical patient felt very left out as she watched us eat}. The staff allowed us to leave one car there even after we had checked out to make our travel easier to the hospital. Highest points for this AmericInn.
