My husband and I are just returning from our stay at the Westin St. John, and it was superior. First to know is that we were there during Tropical Storm Ernesto. Ernesto was right the heels of Hurricane Debby. In a bit of excellent research, my husband found out that first responders, i.e. fire, police, ambulance, etc., stay at the Westin St. John during weather events. Seemed to us, that it was the safest place to be, so we were on our way! THE FERRY To arrive at Westin St. John, you fly into the St. Thomas airport (STT), then take a ferry to St. John. After hours of research, I decided we would take the Westin’s ferry instead of the public ferry. The Westin ferry is $130 each, so I needed to know what kind of value I was getting. The Westin ferry includes: • Room check-in at the Westin desk at the airport. • Bag drop off at the Westin desk at the airport, with direct drop off to your room. • Ground transportation from STT to the Red Hook Ferry Terminal on St. Thomas. • The ferry ride from Red Hook to the dock on the Westin property, where you are greeted with Rum punch and offered a golf cart ride to your room. • Plus, the same service back to the airport at the conclusion of your stay. • Additionally, you can take the Westin Ferry back and forth to St. Thomas as many times as you like for shopping, dining, etc. In my calculations, the public ferry would cost: • Lugging your luggage during the following: o $28 taxi ride ($23 plus tip) from STT to Red Hook. o $6 ferry ride to the St. John Cruz Bay dock (not the Westin dock). o $10 taxi ride ($7 plus tip) from the Cruz Bay dock to the Westin St. John. o $10 to buy your own Rum punch. o Checking in at the Westin St. John front desk. • And doing the same thing back (except for maybe the Rum punch). • Total cost is $98, not including ferry rides between St. John and St. Thomas during your stay. Although this not an exact apples-to-apples comparison, I felt the Westin Ferry was an excellent value. OUR ROOM This was our 30th anniversary trip. Because our trip was 12 days, rather than our normal 7, we booked a studio instead of our usual 1 bedroom. We were located in building 15 (part of the Sunset Bay section) with excellent proximity to the pool. I always bring a beach bag, so that I don’t need to go back and forth to the room. However, for this trip, we were so close that my beach bag was not used once, as it was literally 30 steps from our patio door to the pool. And although we did not have a view of the bay, this location more than made up for it. The studio was absolutely lovely and clean, clean, clean. I mean not one grain of sand clean. I mean cleaner that 5-star hotels we’ve stayed at. You know the ultimate test? It’s when you drop your phone behind the night stand and you cringe thinking of reaching back there to get it. At the Westin St. John, it was clean even behind the night stand! Of course, being a Westin, you expect the Westin Bed. The Westin Be
