Lovely place to stop in a small village. Staff very friendly and helpful. Mostly locals patronise the hotel and happy to chat with tourists. Food is great

The Carew is my local but never used to eat there as it was not good at all. I really like The Bear in Wiveliscombe so was pleased they were taking over The Carew. Unfortunately they have not carried through the quality of food. It is pretty basic pub grub and not very well executed at all. It was a bit embarrassing as I had people staying and said we should try the food at The Carew as The Bear is good. The lunch was really disappointing. It is a great shame as it means I still don't want to eat in my local pub. If The Bear's chef could work with The Carew to improve the menu and quality I would eat there all the time! Unfortunately I won't be returning unless the offer/quality improves past the standard 'just make do' offer that the British public seem to accept without question now.

Stayed following a wedding in the village and as the only pub, were limited in our choice. Arrived later and the pub was busy and welcoming. Our spaciousness room with en-suite overlooked the road but as the village is small and rural, there was no road noise over night. Lovely cooked breakfast served till 11 so no need to rush after a later night.

Great old world charm
Lovely old country inn, dont expect marriot type modern corporate sterility.
What you do get is an old world building with warts and all, fabulous character brilliant welcome and a refreshing can do attitude from all of the staff. We were attending a wedding innthe village and had
a really great stay here. Highly recommend for comfort, charm, and welcoming staff.
Brilliant.

The pub and food down stairs was very good, however the accommodation was awful, no heating in the room, we was supplied a electric oil rad which was totally inadequate, the bedroom was dirty along with the bathroom, there was flies constantly in the room and dead ones on the bed when you woke up in the morning.
The bathroom was all mouldy and there was dark long hair all stuck on the wall in in the shower the light fitting was full of dead flies just a very bad experience in general regarding the overnight accommodation.
I would say that the owners have only recently taken over the business and the pub and food was very good, but the rooms should not be let out until some drastic changes have been made to them.

Lovely village pub with a great atmosphere. Very friendly, efficient service and our meal was delicious. Generous portions and good value! Highly recommend the winter ploughman’s. We had a great evening and will definitely go there again.

Rooms need upgrading
Both rooms we were going to stay in before we decided to leave were in a poor state of repair. Both rooms were damp with black mould.
We understand it’s a very old property, however as I am Asthmatic I felt I couldn’t stay the night.
The rooms just need some upgrade from the owner.
