I am rating it average because it has a number of misses. The concept is great. All the rooms harken to a different year or period in history. So there is a 1958 room and a 1962 room and a 1976 room, etc. Great concept but, in my opinion, poorly executed. To be romantic, I chose the Gatsby Room. It is oversized and sort of nicely period decorated but some of the touches seemed to be cheap. The cabinet in the bathroom comes to mind. Trying too hard to find items associated with The Great Gatsby, but not necessarily the best quality of items. There is a laundry and game room sharing a common wall with our room. The game room closes at 10:00 pm. Not so the laundry which had folks in there late at night and early in the morning. In other parts of the motel, one period room was caution taped off. Apparently it was going to be remodeled but it looked like a crime scene. The parking lot was old and pitted with holes. The landscaping needed significant work. The entrance is only one way, which would be fine, if a new customer didn't decide to park his car in the middle of the narrow driveway preventing existing customer from getting to their rooms. Breakfast was fine for a quick snack before going off to visit Black Canyon of the Gunisson. There was a couple cereals, bagels, bread, hard-boiled eggs and a couple items in a small refrigerator that can be heated in the microwave (like a burrito). But there was a lack of space in the 1950's diner style sitting area forcing new arrivals to go outside or back to their room. I like hotel/motels that make an effort to be unique. In this case, however, I feel like while things may improve as they find their footing, sadly I would have to go to a chain hotel the next time I am in Cortez.

This is an older motel, but it is a fun, clean place to stay. The retro theme is charming. We stayed in a 50’s room. The breakfast could offer more choices, but it was adequate. There’s a large, outdoor chess game, and an indoor game room. We would stay there again if in the area.

What a delight! Each room is thoughtfully decorated according to the room number which corresponds to a particular year. Ours was 1965. Throughout the establishments are colorful, 50-60’s furniture and accessories. Game room plus table tennis only adds to the ambience. Laundry and an outdoor large tv screen are available. Thoughtfully appointed throughout in this enjoyable stop.

The structure reflects the 2-star category in terms of services. The rooms are spacious, clean, and fairly quiet, the beds are comfortable, but they need to be updated in terms of equipment and furniture, which are certainly outdated. The relaxation area for guests with a pool table and foosball table is nice, but the laundry room is a bit small (there's only one washing machine and one dryer). Breakfast is very basic and definitely needs improvement.

What can I say - most unique hotel we've ever stayed in. You have to have an open mind when staying here. The rooms are so cool and like the name says - retro. You park outside right in front of your room. We were in room 1954 so our room was decorated from this time - we had the Babe Ruth room. Our bathroom had the little square pink tiles on the wall (just like my grandparent's had) and the sink and tub fixtures were the large plastic handles. Our phone was the old style handle in the cradle. I think the room numbers go from 1950 to 1983 so you could ask for whatever era you would like to be in. King rooms had very large comfortable beds and tile floors with a large rug at the foot of the bed. We drank beer on the retro lawn furniture both days in the courtyard. The game room has a pool table and a foosball table. Also has multiple pub tables which worked great for us to play cards on each night. The breakfast area reminds you of an old diner (think Happy Days). The breakfast wasn't great though - waxy muffins, single waffles from a box in the frig, yogurt and apples. We ate out the second day. Was a very cool motel and is very popular - would highly recommend!

We regularly stay at this groovy old-school "motor lodge" on trips through Cortez, and each time note improvements that speak to management's real affection for the place. Individual rooms are now sectioned off by trellis walls, and the interiors are even more colorful and amusingly decorated than even before, as well as quieter. I'm writing this from the "1964" room, graced will a wall-sized photo of the Beatles' guitars and drums. There's also now a sizable game room offering billiards, foozball and a PlayStation. All in all a welcome retreat from the impersonal chain hotels lining Cortez' main *****.

Very clean and quiet with quirky but fun decor. Nice breakfast spread! Don't miss the Elvis photo op and the swinging chairs.
