Home2 Suites by Hilton College Station

Usually I stay at the La Quinta Inn and Suites on Earl Rudder when I’m in town, but I had recently stayed with a friend at a Home2 Suites in the Houston Area and found it pleasant, so when I saw there was one in College Station, I thought I would give it a try. It’s located close to campus — pretty much walking distance — which is a plus for family who might be visiting their kids at College. It also backs onto a mixed-use development with a lot of restaurant options, another strong positive. While Texas no longer has a mask ordinance for COVID-19, the CDC and state govt strongly encourage people to use them. This hotel has signs on the windows stating that masks are required, but the majority of guests seem to ignore it and I did not witness any staff requesting customers wear them (even when waiting in line to check in). One of the elevators was broken which meant 6-7 unmasked people crowding into an elevator despite the sign on the elevator door saying “2 people max”. I have a medical condition which places me at high risk, so I always wear a mask. I also take a daily injection which is required to be kept refrigerated, so I choose my travel accommodations partially on the availability of an in-room fridge. The Home2 Suites offer a partial kitchen — full sized fridge, dishwasher, plates and cups, sink and an available burner/pan. I stayed in room 509, but unfortunately the fridge and freezer in that room was not cooling. I tried turning the settings down lower but it still was not cooling. I called the front desk and advised them that it didn’t work, and made do with the small ice chest I carry with me when I travel. The rest of the room was OK. The king bed was comfortable, albeit they only give you two pillows and a decorative throw pillow. The walk-in shower was nice and hot water was ample. Water pressure was strong. Four sets of towels were provided, more than enough for a solo traveler. The plugs built into the nightstand didn’t work, which was annoying, but not a big deal. Overall the Home2 Suites isn’t a bad option when visiting town. Being close to campus and in walking distance to a number of restaurants is a big plus. Plus the couch makes into a sleeper sofa, perfect for larger families. For the price point I would have hoped that things were in better repair — especially when you market yourself as a facility for extended stays. I probably would not stay here again, but that’s based on my special needs. For a family visiting their college kids, it’s a good option and close to everything.
