We are just concluding a vacation at this destination which has been a most enjoyable experience from start to finish. The staff have been extremely friendly and helpful in equal measure, leaving no stone unturned in ensuring our stay has been comfortable and relaxing. Some specifics: We chose a Superior room over the basic Classic and this provided extra space and wonderful views across the valley towards Perugia. The room was well equipped (including a shower) and cleaned on a daily basis. We ate on a dinner included basis which was fine with the menu changing daily. As a fallback position steaks were always available with, for reference, a beef fillet offered with sides (e.g. potatoes) at €30. Wines were extremely good value starting at the ‘house’ level at €15, increasing to much more select bottles costing several hundred euro. Of special note was Moët and Chandon at €55 (£48?) while being sold in a major UK supermarket at £44 so had to have one of those! Senior waiter and sommelier Francesco was always on hand to offer more information on particular bottles considered. Breakfast was the usual continental fare, essentially more than adequate but not noteworthy. The coffee and juice machines were both disappointing and a tip I pass on is to ask any of the waiting staff to make you a coffee in the kitchen which arrives without fuss and tasting considerably better. For the record, the breakfast facility is what prevented a five star score being given by us. The outside bar was reasonably stocked but a draft lager/beer would have been welcome to provide a change from Peroni, Moretti and some obscure local beers. Michelangelo held the fort here and did an amazing job keeping all the guests happy. We decided to forego a car and used the hotel shuttle service for touring and this was successful, albeit at a slight financial disadvantage but worth the peace of mind. Despite having a late flight this evening the hotel kindly allowed us continued use of our room up to 18.30 when we left for the airport. This was priced at a very acceptable cost of €50. Other staff worthy of special mention were Sara and Rachele at the reception who were unfazed by any of our requests and the general manager who even acted as our driver when nobody else was available. So, many, many thanks to all the staff - I’m very much of the view that if you show them due respect it will be reciprocated in abundance. In summary, a great location to relax and use as a base for exploring this beautiful region of Italy - Umbria sometimes gets overlooked in favour Toscana but is unquestionably worthy of its own recognition. Grazie mille, Abbazia.
