Shocking experience! Firstly the trip booked stated 2 breakfast plus 2 evening meals , this was not the case with the hotel stating it was bed and breakfast only, I would have paid the lower rate if I knew this ! The room was then absolutely filthy and had a mattress at least 5 years past its best , solution to this was a mattress topper that really didn't help... The walls are paper thin and the noise from above was just ridiculous, sounded like a clog dancing contest .. Worst bit of the whole stay was the bathroom , you needed a shower after leaving the room never mind as you were in there , the floor tiles were all smashed and sharp and the grout was just black ( lifted the shower mat from the floor after taking a shower and it was filthy ) there was mold all over the skirting board and the shower didn't work correctly ( I have a video to show ) The room ( room 30 ) needs taking apart and starting again ... nobody should be allowed to stay in there ) I will be contacting the hotel separately and I believe a full or partial refund should be offered !

I unfortunately don't drive so had a bit of a hike i.e. walk to the hotel, if I had knowledge of local taxi firm I could've been faster.

After looking at peoples reviews I'm totally gobsmacked, pulling up outside yes it needs a little work but doesn't all grade 2 listed buildings built over 150 years ago, went inside was met by a very lovely women with great humorous personality in Tracey (she is 1 of a kind may I add). Checked in nice and easy went into the bar which is comfortable warm and plenty to offer, just felt like sitting in your own lounge. Decided to go to the room, opened the door and WOW very spacious, very clean, checked the bathroom shower was unbelievable and even had a separate bath, the food is something else, The options available are to a high standard and BIG portions isn't the word, I never found a single fault at all from landing Friday to leaving Sunday, Tracey and Rachel are the backbone to this establishment( and the rest of her team but I mainly delt with these 2) and they made the weekend so wonderful for me and my family, even has a open fire in the lobby so if ya been for a hike or whatever ya get warm instantly, please people disregard some people's review when booking because this needs more credit than I've read, fantastic food, fantastic company, fantastic alchol available, and plenty of tea coffee and water, Tracey even got her team to make us a packed lunch when we popped out during the day, them little touches by them all goes along away, yes people your gona have little issues here and there but come on open your eyes and see the bigger picture, Thank you very much Tracey and her team been a weekend to remember

I'd read the Tripadvisor reviews before we went and they're pretty accurate. The building is very run down but could be stunning in the right hands. The room was spacious but dated. The ensuite looked as though it was from the 80s but was useable although there was quite a lot of dust on skirting boards, lamps, etc and a cork from a bottle left on the bedroom floor. We stayed for two nights. On the first evening, the food was excellent. On day two, the breakfast was disappointing as the hash brown was soggy and the toast hadn't been toasted long enough to give it any colour. On the second evening, our dinner was disappointing, but breakfast on the second morning was excellent with crispy hash browns and properly cooked toast. I can only assume they have two chefs, one of whom is very frugal with the gas/electricity. On the first evening, we were served mainly by Alana. She was excellent. Once she'd served us drinks she regularly checked whether we wanted another and remembered what we were drinking. She was polite and attentive with all the guests as was her colleague. Unfortunately, she and that colleague were not working on our second evening when there were long waits at the bar when the staff on duty were sitting on a settee in the reception area, oblivious to the growing queue of impatient guests. I had to request a steak knife when my steak arrived which seemed to surprise the person serving and I heard the guest at the next table asking the same server for a steak knife for her steak about ten minutes after my request. The sandwiches on arrival were a piece of meat on bread - no salad. The soup was tasty and warm, but not hot. However, on the day we requested a packed lunch, we were offered salad in the sandwiches which was appreciated. The packed lunches on day two comprised a bag of crisps, sandwiches and a pack of two biscuits. A drink would have been appreciated. Would I go again? Yes. We went on an all inclusive deal. It was certainly value for money and verged on entertaining at times.

A quirky large old country hotel with a roaring fire in the hall to welcome you, great location, fantastic service, tasty food and wonderful hospitality, nothing was too much trouble for Jacki and her team. A wonderful homely hotel able to accomodate larger family and group gatherings. Reading some of the older reviews I read before our weekend led me to expect a very run down hotel, I was pleasantly surprised to find my room and the public areas to be spacious and clean, Yes the hotel furniture and fittings are not new and shiny but the atmosphere and great hospitality more than make up for the need for a little TLC. Looking forward to our next gathering there.

My Dad and I had a great couple of nights here whilst visiting the Egremont Crab Fair. It’s a fascinating old building and grounds with lots of quirks. The staff were very friendly and helpful, especially the night porter who served us some drinks and told us a little about the history of the building and local area. Nothing seemed too much for him. Obviously the building is a little tired and need of a bit of TLC, but this didn’t detract from our experience; perhaps even added to it.
