As others have written, this hotel could be good - but there are just so many failings which make a stay here disappointing. A bath mat was missing. Towels are fine but are not generously sized. Wifi was good. It was frustrating that the reception desk was not manned more often - especially annoying at check out time as there was no one to say 'How was your stay? ' (I am not sure if they are interested in feedback because if they were, they would make sure there was someone present at check out time) But the hugest disappoinment was the lack of cooked breakfast. This was a surprise - I had no idea that I was booked into somewhere that did not serve any cooked breakfast. It then became apparent that cooked breakfasts stopped a week ago. I felt very sorry for the waiter who had to deal with many unhappy customers - none of which were aware of this change. The continental breakfast that was served was not very appealing - everything just seemed cheap. (So disappointing especially as there is a fantastic deli/bakery just up the road serving amazing croissants) For the price that is charged, there should be a cooked breakfast offered. I would imagine that all the other hotels in Tetbury offer a cooked breakfast. For this reason, I would not return.

Clean hotel and grounds, friendly staff, lovely gardens and rooms. Thank you to Julia for her support during the wedding planning, always responsive and friendly and very professional. And on the day we were so grateful for Quintin and Markus. When we met Quintin the day before the wedding to talk through things, he was so calm and made it very clear that nothing was too much trouble for us to ask. The room for the reception looked lovely! Of the evening Markus was amazing, so happy all day and again, offering to help us with anything - we couldn't have asked for better service and it exceeded our expectations. The staff did an amazing job keeping things to time (most likely, trying to find me or keep me to time!) In fact, our family and the bridesmaids all actually said how accommodating the hotel were and what great service there was- we wanted to share this positive feedback. Several guests have since commented to us how amazing the food was- especially the white onion soup (wish we could have the recipe)! And from a dietary requirement point of view from me as a Coeliac requiring gluten free, the staff were amazing. Approaching me and confirming things were gluten free, I had full confidence things were separated and managed appropriately, I am so grateful.
We stayed in a spacious suite at Whateley Manor for six nights in late September, as part of a birthday trip exploring rural UK (we are Americans). From start to finish, we felt welcome and service was perfect in every way. Every detail we asked for was amazingly promptly attended to, but personnel went further -- they were proactive, and anticipated our needs. We had just come from another 5 star hotel where service was only 4 star, and the difference was refreshing. Our spacious quiet suite (room 17, 2nd floor) had a comfortable handmade mattress, a large living area, a bath with a two-person oversized soaking tub and separate shower with fluffy towels and bathrobes, a huge amount of closet and storage space, an in-room coffee/teamaker as well as a small fridge, and daily laundry service at a reasonable price. The food, wine, and service (especially by sommelier Connor) in the main dining room were simply brilliant, very creative. The lounge and bar area was comfortable with soft chairs and sofas and eclectic art work. Room service snacks were also available 24/7. In contrast, breakfast was not special (Full English, eggs and salmon, eggs benedict, but no interesting breads or varied charcuteries), but this is routine for upscale English inns. The same venue was used for the second restaurant, Grey's, which had a very limited though good menu (what I did not like there was the pumped in Detroit style pop music, it was distracting and tiring). This inn is on the extreme southern end of the Cotswolds, so the drive to get to the hub of things is further than with more centrally located hotels, and that is it's one disadvantage. Overall, however, we loved this inn.
We stayed for just one night (party of 6 in 3 double rooms) to celebrate my son’s 18th birthday. The hotel reception bar and dining area is spacious, comfortable and full of character. As it is an old building, there are a few stairs and narrow corridors which add to the charm of the building. Our rooms were all clean, with very comfortable beds. The breakfast was extremely well cooked and there was plenty of it. The best thing for me was the attitude of the staff. They were extremely warm and welcoming and we would (and will) return in the future without hesitation. If you are looking for a friendly country hotel warmth and character, this is it. If you are looking for high tech, minimalist living, this isn’t for you.
Our 4th visit for lunch. Standards appear to be slipping. We were seated in a lounge room for lunch, when we had explicitly booked to eat in the dining room/ restaurant. Our booking details were not checked on arrival. We were seated in one of the “Lounge” areas, and waited 15 minutes before we were asked if we would like a drink. After ordering 3 glasses of sherry, after 10 minutes, we were informed that there was no sherry. The low lounge coffee-style table was then provided with cutlery in the style of the expectation of a “Bar” snack. We explained that we had booked for a formal lunch in the dining room. The food was superb - no complaints here - but the staff appeared to be inexperienced, and the standard of service was well below par. After recommending the hotel to many friends, we were most disappointed by our experience on September 11, and as a result we shall not return; neither shall we recommend the hotel in the future. What a pity, we previously thought we had found the ideal place for a perfect lunch.
