The hotel is in a lovely location with several walks available straight from the door. We dined in the bar area rather than the restaurant each evening of our four night stay, and the food and choice were excellent. We would definitely stay there again if we were to revisit the area. Having said that, we have only given it four stars for the following reasons. When I booked on the hotel website I opted to pay more for a room that promised either a view of Thorpe Cloud or a view of the ‘beautiful’ garden. We were actually given a room with a view of sheep on a nearby fellside, which was ok but not what we were led to expect. The room was a decent size with a nice bathroom. Sadly there was no hot water on the first day due we were told to a boiler malfunction. Over the following three days the water never got warmer than lukewarm. No further explanation or apology were offered, even when we paid the bill. Perhaps they could have offered a slight reduction on the bill, or a free drink with our meal, just some small gesture to acknowledge the inconvenience.

I stayed here for one night midweek as a late autumn break to explore the Peak District for the first time. I travel a great deal and stay in hotels for at least four months a year and I expect high standards. The hotel did not deliver this. Whilst The Three Horseshoes Hotel was immaculately clean, the reception staff, who are the first and last points of contact, completely failed to be helpful or friendly. I dealt with several people and I would go so far as to say that they were downright unhelpful, cold and aloof. I couldn't help but sense that guests were made to feel they were an inconvenience. Check in was more of an interrogation than a pleasant experience and the staff member failed to point out where the restaurant was (I had booked on a DBB basis). The hotel, however, is attractive from the outside and every area that I visited was immaculately clean. Stays are not cheap and I would suggest that they are rather overpriced for the standards delivered. What upset me the most was that I contacted the hotel in advance (they sent me a pre-arrival email to complete my check in details) and I requested a late check out until 12:00, which was one hour extra. I did not receive any reply. I mentioned this at check in and the young lady processing my arrival simply looked at me down her nose and replied, ”We don't permit late checkouts”. I asked if she was sure and she simply turned away. I had booked a ”Fourposter Hot Tub Room” and whilst this was clean and quite attractive, it was much too small to accommodate such a large (and impressive) bed. The furnishings, however, were of a generally high standard. There were two chairs near the foot of the bed and a small writing desk to one side. High quality bathrobes and matching towels for use in the outdoor hot tub were neatly placed on the bed. The bedroom was too hot, even in November, and whilst a fan was placed in the wardrobe, there was no air conditioning. I resorted to opening the patio doors but this did little to help. There was no safe or fridge in the room, though a large jug of water was provided. There was ample tea and coffee, and hot chocolate was also available, along with some biscuits. The bathroom was large with a jacuzzi bath and a separate shower. Again, this was immaculately clean. There was wall mounted soap and shampoo in the shower but no way of knowing which was which. The soap near the sink was also wall mounted. There was no soap or shampoo for use with the bath. I was also disappointed that there were no other toiletries such as lotion available. I selected this hotel due to the fact that the room was meant to have its own garden with a wooden hot tub. This was reached through patio doors and I was quite surprised to find that the ”garden” was little more than a flagged terrace with a shrub in each corner. Located in an English town, if you are not driving, you have to take a taxi to the nearby train station; uber is hard to call in the country. Ann and Peter are both elderly, ann is not bad, peter is particularly cold and not very Friendly. The hotel is nice and exquisite, but the surrounding environment is a bit problematic. It is not recommended for Chinese guests, especially those who are older.

I am glad I used mainly Clubcard vouchers to pay for this otherwise I would have been very disappointed & gutted to have spent that much money, the hotel was just average. The rooms are actually in external ‘cabins’ very basic, pillows were the hardest I’ve ever slept on & so was the mattress. The whole place felt very old fashioned & a bit run down, not the quaint country pub way like we had hoped. No atmosphere at all. The evening meal was very expensive for the quality £16 for scampi & chips, this was the equivalent of what we pay locally for a quality meal cooked from scratch. Breakfast was not great, Aldi versions for most condiments & nothing seemed particularly fresh, mainly out of packets, not nice fresh croissants & not quality. We stayed at Alton Towers the next night & the difference was like night & day, it was the same price had I not used the vouchers.

Beautiful old medieval building with tons of character. Very warm and cosy in our Barn accommodation block. Kitchen very clean and tidy. A very warm welcome from Jack and the team at reception. We did two of the advertised walks to Pilsbury which were very enjoyable. WiFi in the main areas but not everywhere. Highly recommend.
