We stayed at the Riccarton Inn for three nights in July as we were attending a wedding at the nearby Free Company.  After originally booking a city centre hotel we decided to look at something a little closer and found The Riccarton which looked to be nearby, with nice rooms and at a good price. Before booking we contacted the venue via FaceBook to see if there were any room suggestions and we were told that rooms 1, 2 & 5 are double rooms but they suggested room 1 as the best pick out of the three if it was available…… it was, so we booked it. Getting to the venue was relatively easy, it was a 15 ish minute walk from Currie Hill train station although the majority was uphill so probably not the best route to take if you have reduced mobility.  There is a bus stop just over the road from the venue and if you catch the 44 from the city centre it drops you right there (the bus stop right outside the venue, i.e. on the same side of the road, takes you back into the centre on the 44 bus.  Buses are easy with TapTapCap so you can use your debit / credit card or device (always use the same card or device to make sure the cap applies).  A single journey is £1.80 and it caps at £4.40 for a full days travel.  We said that the next time we stay at the venue we’d definitely finish our journey on the bus instead of the train.  Oh, the venue is also on the N44 route which is the night bus service, ideal if you go out for a few drinks and it saves on taxis.  There are a few different local taxi services as well as Uber, the couple of times we used a taxi we did use Uber in the end as they were actually cheaper and we found them a little more reliable. Check in was really simple, we didn’t prepay but the cost of the room was charged to the card we booked with on the morning before we arrived.  All we needed to do was pop a signature onto the booking confirmation at the bar and we were handed our keys, one for the main door to the venue (it gets locked at midnight so you can let yourself in) and one to the room.  We didn’t pre-request breakfast but we decided to add it on for two of the mornings and paid for it at the bar…….. I would highly recommend the breakfast, at £8.95 per person it is most definitely worth it (more on that later). The room itself (room 1) was a decent size, it had a very comfortable bed, a built-in closet and plenty of drawer space.  The en-suite bathroom had a good size bath with over bath power shower, toilet and wash basin… again all spotlessly clean.  The towels were really fluffy and properly dried you instead of just moving the water around which is always a good plus.  At night the room did get a little warm but as long as you don’t mind your window open and you leave the bathroom door and window open you do cool down a little.  There are tea/coffee making facilities in the room and a hairdryer is also provided.  The WiFi code is provided on a welcome card which we found in one of the drawers in the desk. Stayed here prior to collecting guests from Edinburgh. It is the most amazing house, I believe George Gillespie built it for his mother in the 1790s(?) and you are staying in a family home, with the most amazing furniture, books, eclectic ornaments, but with all the home comforts. Huge, high bed in my room, I felt like a princess climbing into it, and slept wonderfully, waking up to birds. Kettle provided, my only gripe was a small cup, but then I mainline coffee in the morning! Breakfast was in a beautiful room, perfectly laid out, huge choice of cereal, fresh fruit, and the cooked breakfast was perfect. It was an easy walk into Colinton, ten minutes, and I imagine easy to get into Edinburgh. Small gates to get into the property, I didn’t want to tempt fate by trying to get my van through them, but lots of parking on the road outside. The host, whose name I didn’t get, was such a gentleman, I only wish I’d had more time to speak to him about the history of the house. Ten minutes walk to see the Colinton Tunnel which is Scotlands longest mural, well worth a visit. Absolutely recommend staying here, it’s beautiful with a gorgeous puppy and a cat that ignored me ;) clean, quiet, and you’re staying in a historical house that I wish I’d had more time to explore, especially all the books.

It's far from the city center, not very convenient. There are no supermarkets or restaurants nearby. I feel like living in a barren mountain. There is no elevator in the hotel and it is very difficult to carry luggage. The breakfast is rich, but the quality of coffee is poor. The dinner is good and the service attitude is average.

Our room was clean and nicely furnished, with a pleasant view of the fountain and horses. I liked that a history of the castle was included. A fan would have been welcome, because the weather was unseasonably warm. This may seem picky, but I found the American country music playing in the lobby and restaurant incongruous with the castle “vibe.” I didn’t book a castle stay in Scotland to hear the same music that plays at the local greasy spoon back in the states. How about some Handel? Also the billiard table was in terrible condition, equipped with toy balls- a detail that detracted from both the billiard room and the lovely room next to it. More attention to detail would make the price more justifiable. A cleanup of the little house seating area at the edge of the woods in the back lawn is also in order. Nevertheless, enjoyed our stay.

The room was very clean and well-equipped. We brought our children with us and there was no inconvenience at all. The landlord was very friendly and helped us exchange cash, pick us up and drop us off, and explained the architecture of the city to us. In short, it was a very worthwhile trip. I like the landlord. He even personally sent us to the train platform at the end.

We used this hotel following arrival at the airport from overseas and night prior to departure . It was ideal. Nice location, friendly staff. It was pleasant to walk around the wooded campus and neighborhoods of adjacent Herriot-Watt University. We will be back. ... I would note however, that some may feel the privacy in the bathroom is a bit compromised by the construction of the bathroom doors and side panels (opaque material which lets the light shine through, and large see-through cracks between the door and the adjacent wall - not completely private).

I booked a deluxe room through booking at this hotel based on the photos that advertised it and trusting in the good reviews of The Lane Hotel. Unfortunately, upon arrival I realized that I had made a mistake. To begin with its location is very far from the center, in a neighborhood without any attraction, which forces you to depend on the bus for everything. To continue, there is no reception, we were attended by a waitress from the pub on the corner who had my name written down on a piece of paper. To leave the luggage, since the room was not ready, we had to accompany her across a courtyard, to another building where she opened a storage room for us. Once it was time to check in we were escorted to a house on the same street, which is located next to the parking lot of the pub. My surprise was that the supposed deluxe room I had booked was the first room I entered through the door leading to the house. This meant noise and zero privacy every time other guests entered or left. The room on the first floor with 3 windows, one of them overlooking a wall just 5 cm away, did not look like the one in the pictures I had booked, no free-standing bathtub, no king size bed, nothing at all, so I asked the employee to confirm that it was the right room and she replied that ”of course it was, in fact it was one of their best rooms”. Analyzing the space, we have been able to know that the room in the ad is a ”suite”. a new room category that did not exist when I booked, which in fact is not even in that building, but just above the pub on the corner. It was all extremely disappointing because it was a couples trip and I felt ripped off. I had asked for a quiet room and they gave us the worst in this respect, I asked for top floor and they gave me the ground floor, and neither the cleanliness, nor the dimensions, nor the decoration corresponded to what I had contracted. I asked for a couple of extra pillows and they left one on the fire extinguisher next to the entrance door through which everyone passed. They advertise themselves as a boutique hotel and they are not at all, neither in the professionalism of their staff, nor in the facilities (which are nonexistent) or any kind of detail to the guests. The mattress was too soft, the amenities were poor and of different brands, etc. In short, terrible value for money and a terrible experience. I am very surprised by the high marks given to this accommodation, although after analyzing them, most of those who give them a high score have only reviewed this accommodation, at least suspicious.
