The room was built in a RV campground in the middle of the woods using domestic materials similar to construction floor houses. The sound insulation was very poor, and there was no screen window. When it was opened, various mosquitoes could come in, and when it was closed, there was no ventilation. There are several beaches and waterfalls within a few minutes' drive, but there are no supermarkets or restaurants within a 30-minute drive (the hotel camp has expensive and unpalatable foreign fast food like burgers and French fries). The service staff of the entire camp They are all Indians; plus the price is more than 1,600 per night during the Spring Festival. The overall experience and price-performance ratio are very poor, unless you want to experience an outdoor environment similar to an RV.

I stayed in the Kiwiana Cabin with shared bathroom. It was really very tiny with a small round table I could just about place my laptop on after removing some tea making equipment - there was no milk. I would not recommend it for two people. It was a hot day so I had to open the windows and door but then all kinds of flying things come in. There is no mosquito net. The worst was the smell of the bedding. It smelled like it had been on the bed for quite some time and gotten damp. The room does not have a refigerator. WiFi was good for most of the time but suddenly it did not work anymore. They should have security going round. Opposite was a lady on a camper site who shouted and swore for 4 hours till after 11pm. I did not dare say anything as a woman alone. Parking was good right in front of the house. The Fish&Chips in the restaurant were very good, especially the fish and the sauce. I found the price appropriate. The location is perfect to visit the cathedral caves and the McLean Falls.

Our family (which included two teenagers) stayed in a chalet for 3 nights which worked really well. The kitchen was well equipped for self catering. I like the little bench top oven. Do your shopping in Balclutha if you coming from the Dunedin side. We had dinner at the restaurant on our first night and really liked the nacho's with pulled pork. It was a shame the pizza oven wasn't going as I saw that advertised on the website. I enjoyed a barista coffee at the restaurant one morning too which was great. The campsite itself needs a bit of tidying up but overall okay. It's surrounded by bush and birds. Take hay fever tablets if you are a sufferer. McLeans Waterfall is very close and also Cathedral Caves.

We stayed in a chalet which worked really well for our family of four. Clean, warm and well set up for us to self-cater. The "resort" itself is looking a bit tired - bits and pieces like old furniture and road cones lying about, however the bush setting is lovely for listening to birdsong. The restaurant was very disappointing - expensive and underwhelming. It was a shame they weren't using the pizza oven and creating some atmosphere. Location is ideal though for a holiday in this beautiful spot in the Catlins and the McLeans Waterfall behind Whistling Frog was easily a highlight.

reception not very hospitable on arrival, found toilet not flushed on arrival, unit not properly cleaned on arrival dirty marks on lounge walls, cold, only 2 small column heaters , lounge panel heater not working , no hot water jug. ripoff pre paid $1870 for 5 nights this made it $175 a night dearer than any motel in Invercargill , only stayed 1 night, communal lounge & kitchen a joke, nothing like on line add, or even in unit book. looks like previous owners add, stay in Balclutha or Invercargill go for day trip ,

1. Room check: the room needs to be checked. There was a dirty flannel in a draw in the bathroom and a sock under a bed that was not ours. 2. You need to provide hand soap in rooms. 3. The lodge kitchen needs a deep clean. 4. The lodge kitchen needs cleaning cloths, tea towels and dishwasher pods every day. 5. The lodge rubbish bins need to be emptied regularly. 6. The cloths washing machine did not work. After 4 cycles our clothes were not clean. It didn't seem to rinse or spin. 7. Freezer jn the lodge was not working as a freezer. 8. For the cost of the room I would have expected it to be serviced daily. 9. Grounds need to be weeded and tidied up. I hope you can get this all sorted before the summer season starts.

As noted by others there are clearly many issues at the whistling frog. I’d like to say that the room we were in around the back nearby the communal kitchen, was clean, well appointed and generous in size. The bed was comfortable and the shower hot. The communal kitchen however was disgusting. There was wasn’t a cupboard or drawer that wasn’t covered in mouse poo. I can’t understand how this can be allowed to occur. Looking at the photos posted on their web site and looking around the environs today it’s clear the old frog has seen better days.

We stayed for one night in a tiny cabin. The small room contained two single beds, a tiny table with two chairs and a TV. The room was clean but neighbours occupied our assigned parking space. The shared restroom was old, smelly and unhygenic. At night the lights turned off shortly after entering. The TV oddly had one single channel. But we were staggered over the very high prices at the bar. City prices for wine (at the back of beyond) and vastly overpriced food. I would have rated this two stars but friendly staff lifted this a little. Not recommended unless you self cater.

I gave 2 stars for the location. 0 for cleanliness we asked on 3 occasions when the cleaners would do the kitchen and showers. It wasn't till the 3 day a young girl was doing the kitchen, it still looked the same after. Dirty smelly clothe etc will not go again
