Moved here from Secret Harbor two days after arriving. SH was sold out the middle three days of my nine day stay. The accommodations were better than Secret Harbor, primarily due to not being water or beachside. Like many resorts here, Bluebeard’s is situated on the side of a steep hill, theirs with a beautiful view of Charlotte Amalie and the giant harbor. There are, I believe, at least three, possibly more, clusters of condos around the centerpiece brick castle center. Pirate’s Pension is at a level lower than the complexes nerve center. It consists of four buildings with various numbers of units. I stayed in the second unit off of the main access road, called Privateer. The main bar/restaurant, pool and hot tub were a number of flights of steep stairs cut into the hillside across from our parking spaces at Privateer. As I had some recent problems with my feet and ankles I drove up and around to the main entrance to reduce the number of strides and distance to the amenities level. The entrance, main lobby and front desk are beautifully and appropriately appointed. You get the feeling of part of the island’s history. It’s a bit of a catch-22 here, better digs and fun stuff, just not on or even within walking distance of swimmable sand. Really wanted to give this place 3-1/2 stars because of two significant (to me, anyway) mountain missteps. I checked in on a Wednesday afternoon. Took advantage of the pool and hot tub every night upon return from the beach of the day. Saturday evening the hot tub jets died. They weren’t repaired until Tuesday night. If your property is not on the beach this is something you can’t afford to have out of service for three full days. The second issue was fresh towel replenishing services. As these are condos and not a hotel, there is no daily maid service. If you want fresh bed linens and towels you must ***** and gather them yourself, put them in a provided mesh bag, hang them outside on your door knob and call the front desk to inform them. Five days after moving here I gathered the towels and followed the drill. Went to a new beach, stayed most of the day, returning about 12 hours after requesting towel service. The original bag was still hanging on my doorknob. Called the front desk again. This time someone brought clean towels and took the dirty towel bag within half an hour. There are things you can’t just brush off as “island time.” Again, if you’re not on the sand and don’t have daily maid service this kind of service has to be automatic. The bartenders were great!
