Cape Otway Lightstation

After driving from Port Campbell to view the lighthouse , it was disappointing to say the least that access to the lighthouse is within the precinct and this was closed. We knew that the cafe, etc was closed on a Wed & Thurs, but not that this would restrict a closeup view of the lighthouse. After visiting other lighthouse sites during many trips, this is the only one where access is not allowed unless the whole precinct is open and entry fee is charged.

Despite it being somewhat disappointing that the lighthouse was not open to climb into, the history of the area from the 1850s and finding out about the telegraph & lighthouse’s importance to Australia was unexpectedly interesting!! Richard, who was very knowledgeable about the many aspects of the area’s development and the tragedies suffered by the indigenous people of the area and the difficulties faced by the various inhabitants after colonisation, gave us a great insight into the critical nature of its existence. Thanks Richard for making the visit to the light station so worthwhile.
