Best Western Abbots Barton Hotel

This hotel in Canterbury is highly recommended. The hotel should have a history of more than 100 years. It is a family business. The house looks ancient from the outside, but it has been renovated inside. The lobby is quite modern. We booked a king-size room, which was very large. The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was also large. The key point is that the hotel parking lot is free. If you drive to Canterbury, I highly recommend staying here. It takes about 20 minutes to park the car and walk to the center of Canterbury. Compared with international chains, we prefer these local hotels, which are less crowded, quieter, more comfortable, and more cost-effective.

Room was a good size and clean. The double bed was a good size and comfortable. The sofa bed was a good size but a little uncomfortable. Good options for breakfast (cereal, toast, english breakfast) although some of the hot items were cold. All staff were friendly and helpful.
Thanington Hotel

First things first - it is now called the Thanington Hotel. Parking is limited - once you enter there is no room to turn round if it is full and getting in and out of spaces is tricky. We parked on the back roads opposite the hotel for most of our stay. 15 minutes walk to the main shops and cathedral with a few decent pubs on the way. We were in room 9, decent size room with plenty of storage space. It was a bit tight between the bed and the wall. Good bathroom with powerful shower. We had air-con in our room but we couldn’t keep it on as it dripped tons of condensation onto the floor - we half-filled the waste paper bin. We enjoyed the hot and cold buffet breakfast with the occasional wait while they topped up the servers. We tried the bar one evening but there was not much choice and the night manager didn’t have much of a clue on portion sizes. We loved the inner courtyard for a relaxed rest. We’d definitely use again if we were in the area.

Went in for the Pub Quiz on Sunday. Lovely atmosphere and good afternoon's entertainment. Bar selection was a bit limited and steep in price. Only a larger on draft, no ales on tap although the bottles were from local breweries, no soft drinks on tap only bottles so expensive for the little capacity. Food choices very limited only a couple of choices of crisps. Selection of gin was very good, and very much enjoyed! Will we be back to support the quiz? Of course but could not afford every week.

The hotel is in a small town, and it is very close to the town on foot.....The lower level is a bar and restaurant, but it is quiet, with a small river in front, the rooms are European and clean, and you can see the cathedral.... .The breakfast is very rich, I chose a full English breakfast...
Castle House Hotel

I would call this an over priced bed and breakfast not a hotel. Plus = free parking and easy walking into city. We were in a large family room which was light but the hotel is on a busy roundabout so noisy with the window open. Shower had plenty of hot water. Now the negatives! Entering the building the reception desk is so high it's difficult to tell if anyone is behind it. Only a poor continental breakfast. Breakfast room is small and one table is almost in the doorway so constantly leaning from one side or the other enabling other people to pass. Little evidence of staff and noticed one family had to clear their table as no member of staff available. No fresh fruit only tinned, only full fat yoghurts. Cereal came in small boxes and limited choice. Had to ask for toast and think they use the cheapest bread they can find. Paintwork needs redoing as very chipped and an odd assortment of pictures. Not a happy experience
