We stayed here on our way from Southern Spain to Yorkshire. Very, very impressed with the location and in particular the staff . The management were soooo busy but still made the time to personalise our stay and have the odd friendly chat as time allowed. Good humoured, pleasant, efficient and welcoming. 100% recommend!!

Visited on a Sunday, decided to book a table for 6pm as it was a bank holiday and sunny for once. The chap behind the bar had clearly had enough by 6pm and was bordering on rude. The waitress was lovely however they had run out of half the menu and there was an hour wait for food. We quickly ordered sharing nachos and a burger. Sadly the nachos were poor and the burger over cooked, and full of gristle. They came with skinny fries and no other accompaniment, seriously not worth the price! The refurbished courtyard looked like a great place to meet friends for a drink before moving on to eat elsewhere.

We would not stay anywhere else in Bury St Edmunds. Outstanding refurbishment, now not only the rooms but the courtyard garden. Those rooms are superb, both comfortable and smart (though why bathroom designers don't put in more shelf space is baffling). The pub itself is busy, welcoming and, of course, the beer is excellent.

This hotel has recently undergone a major refurbishment. The room was beautiful with classy lighting and lovely decor. The bathroom was immaculate and the shower amazing. The pub has so much character and has been beautifully decorated without losing a sense of historic age. The breakfasts were tasty and hot and the choice good. Bury St Edmunds is a lovely place to visit- cathedral, brewery, Ickworth House not far. Lots to do and see. I have given 4 stars because of the following: Unfortunately we spent ages trying to park - there isn't enough spaces for the rooms. We called the Greene King hotel line and they were helpful and we were able to park in the brewery car park a little walk away. Upon arrival at the main entrance we were left standing and ignored at the bar by a member of the bar staff as though we werent there. They didnt even make eye contact. We waited for what seemed a while and we were then asked to go to the other side of the bar by somebody else. Once we were there we were quite quickly seen and we went to our room. This is a very busy pub. It was heaving inside and out and quite noisy. We couldn't get a table to eat but the food looked good. There are plenty of places nearby to eat. Despite the noise, we did however get a very good night's sleep as the rooms were not affected. A lovely hotel with rooms brought up to a high standard. Would have been a 5 if it wasn't so noisy and had we been greeted at the desk after a two hour drive.

This used to be our local as teenagers (many years ago), so it was nice to go back and find it so welcoming after the extensive refurbishment. Beautifully decorated, great service and a varied menu. I would say that it is high end pub grub and priced as such. Busy for a Wednesday evening with a mixture of post work, post shopping and early evening diners. The only downside was that the very nicely decorated toilets were a mess, but the waiting staff can’t be responsible for people not flushing loos or putting paper in the toilets. The outside area is very impressive, the crab burgers on the specials menu were delicious and we will definitely be back!

After staying here for 1 night on a bed and breakfast stay in November 2021 .We was very impressed with the Breakfast. It was lovely on taste and presentation so we thought we would return when in bury st edmunds again for a evening meal. How wrong we were to do that. Joined by my sister and brother in law we have never had so much rubbish put in front of us at anytime of eating out. Our table was booked in advance and it was changed from 2 people to 4 people over the phone which we was told they could accommodate. The table we was allocated was in the bar.no problem with that at all but when I go out for a meal I do not expect to sit on a stool that doesn't even have the height to come up to your knees. When ordering food .we was having steak. No we wasn't they had ran out on a Saturday at 8pm. Triple cooked chips no as well. It was no we have ran out of that to quite a few things. We ended up with scampi and thin chips and peas. The presentation and food quality was rubbish and will not return to this place for food again. Want a lager for around £3.50 forget it .no carlsbad no fosters no carling just your over priced beers. On returning here after our great breakfast it just shows how wrong you can get it sometimes. Their website really tells a differant story to what we saw on this rubbish and waste of time night. It was great to spend some time with my sister but I should of booked somewhere else. Never again

Everybody went out of their way to be friendly, chatty and helpful, and we stayed for 4 nights so met a lot of staff! Menu nicely varied and food was always good. Room was tired, but you've got to be understanding as the hotel closed for refurbishment the following week. We really enjoyed staying in a no-nonsense pub.
