Lovely traditional hotel - very comfortable room; charismatic restaurant although despite booking was over 30mins late being called through from lively Friday night bar. Great food. Friendly staff. Reception experience needs improving.

I left a honest but disappointing review after our wedding night was abysmal.(short version Recap) On arrival we appeared to have woken the night porter. We were not allowed drinks despite asking for a night cap on booking. Our room was dark dingy and tired. It was supposed to be the bridal suite. It was clearly our wedding night as I was still in my dress but the staff couldn’t get us to bed fast enough. I received a response on here to say someone would be in contact. No one ever contacted me. Instead they deleted my review. Such a shame.

I have a very long history with this hotel and have been staying here and eating here since the 1980s , it has always been a watchword for reliable comfort and luxury and I even spent my wedding night here in 2016. So when my pre booked trip to another hotel fell through due to flooding I decided to visit my old faithful . How wrong I was ! The check in was uncaring with one woman behind a flimsy desk . She was doing her best but was either totally worn out or past caring . The room was like a claustrophobic cupboard. Worn and airless and scruffy and all for over £300.00 per night . I went back to the reception and asked to move which she could do but only for an extra £100,00 she wasn’t wearing a highwayman’s mask but she should have been ! In tandem it was my birthday and wedding anniversary which I told the hotel in advance . The other cancelled hotel always leave a bottle of fizz as a treat and here I just got a rubbish card with a tokenistic message. I was booked to go back with friends in December which I have now cancelled . Whatever has gone wrong with this hotel needs rectifying it is a crying shame and a total rip off !

Saturday morning. Popped in early for a coffee and bacon sandwich. It takes a little while to get served as reception staff don’t seem to communicate with restaurant that people are in the lounge. But when it came, fantastic bacon sandwich stuffed with loads of bacon. The coffee (Cappuccino) was excellent.

My husband and I stayed at the Angel hotel for two weeks in September. We also stayed for two weeks in July. This is a lovely hotel. The staff are fabulous. They really make the whole place ,we only had breakfast, and it was absolutely lovely every time. The breakfast is served to you, so there is no buffet bar. This is a lovely to way to have your breakfast. People tell me that their restaurant is lovely and the food is delicious. It is a boutique hotel and rather beautifully designed with lovely decor. We had an impression room, and it was designed lovely and had a lot of room. Housekeeping came every day , stocked everything up, made your bed and cleaned up. Again the housekeeping staff are lovely. Bury St Edmunds is a lovely place, the park is absolutely beautiful, with lots of benches to sit on. We visited Cambridge, Ely, Norwich, Lavenham and a few other places. Bury St Edmunds is a handy place to to visit other areas. Thank you to all at the hotel for making our stay reallly memorable and restful, just what we need after a very busy year of many downs and quite a few ups.

Lovely visit to The Angel. From arriving to leaving team looking after us was excellent. Lovely room on third floor - there is a lift but a little way from room no 462. Very comfortable bed and nice decor although maybe needing a little touch up here and there. Good en-suite facilities and toiletries. Little awkward as shower was in bath so you have to take care. Hotel did provide non-slip bath mat on request. The room overlooked back of hotel so outlook not so good but at least it was quiet. Lovely restaurant with attentive team and food quality and presentation for both breakfast and evening meal was excellent. Surroundings and atmosphere was really relaxing. Help from concierge on arrival was good as carpark is a little on small side. Hotel is in an excellent position for exploring the area. This hotel is a little gem.

This is an excellent place to enjoy quality drinks in a beautiful setting. The place is dim lit (in a good way) with a good selection of quality drinks and attentive staff. The drinks in this beautiful hotel were cheaper and better than the drinks in our poor chain hotel up the road. Thoroughly recommended for drinks.

Steve the porter was brilliant, very efficient, pity he couldn't wait on tables in the lounge area too, on many occasions we have waited for service and I have mentioned this before on previous reviews but still nothing has been done, the lounge never seems to be overly busy and our table where we had coffee was dirty from the previous day.

Fabulous looking hotel inside and out. Amazing Charles Dickens themed afternoon tea. Super selection of savoury and sweet treats and pots of tea. All very tasty in a relaxed atmosphere with very courteous and friendly service from the young gentleman serving us.
