Very well located in Burnt Pine, close to most shops and eating places. Our booking, through **********, included airport transfers, a half day island tour and use of a rental car for the entire stay. Tess, the manager and Serah, her assistant offered a warm welcome and assistance during our stay. Reception is not attended 24/7. The apartments are older (1970s style and largely unchanged) with wide, shady verandas front and back, the front opening onto a large lawn, colourful gardens and swimming pool. One-bedroom apartments have a well-equipped kitchen (no dishwasher) adjacent to the living area, a separate bedroom and ensuite bathroom. Our apartment was clean and comfortable. There is a guest laundry, washer dryer and ironing facilities, $2.00 for each machine. We kept the apartment windows open night and day to get good airflow, which is essential in this humid climate. A pedestal fan provided adequate cooling on hot days and nights. The slight smell of “damp” we had noticed on entering the closed apartment disappeared quickly. The “damp” smell was present in many buildings on Norfolk. Air conditioning is very rare; both air conditioning and electric stoves have been banned because of the limited supply and high (72cents/kwh) cost of electricity. Free wifi is not provided in the apartments, global roaming is not available on Norfolk Island, so Australian mobile phones cannot be used there. Communication is best obtained by buying a prepaid data SIM card from Norfolk Island Telecom. Wifi is available in several places without charge, one of which, the Norfolk island Bowling Club, serves delicious meals. We would return to Fletcher Christian but if you want the slickest, most modern and 24 hour service, it’s not for you.
