There are still many families living in the tulou. Main business is agriculture and tourism.
The roads leading to the tulou are made up of irregularly shaped stones. As such, it’s not easy to pull the big luggage along (few hundred metres walk). Recommend to carry backpacks for short stays, leave the big luggage at the tourists centre.
Good experience to live together with friendly people whom I can practice my Hakka.
They also provide home-cooked meals, reasonable prices. Good food."

"The host Ah Wei is a gem . He always greet you with a smile and accommodate our meal request . He will suggest certain local harvested vegetables which were so delicious , cooked by him. Knowing what we wish to eat for dinner, he ensured that the ingredients were prepared ahead as they needed a certain amount of time to season them.
He gave us good explanation of the various items we saw in the hall as we were both quite curious what they were. There was never an attempt to sell it.
He also gave us a good history lesson on the origin of their village, and the various tulos.
Finally, we requested his help for a transfer and because of his connections, it was well arranged. Thank you Ah Wei for welcoming us to your home and the 6 meals in your place were very very good."

"I would like to thank all staffs for making our 2 nights stay so comfortable and amazing. They are all very helpful and their services are really wonderful. The place is very neat and clean.
I brought my 16 months old girl to the retreat. They have specifically prepared her dinner based on my requirement and I must say that their food are really very delicious.

"What an amazing experience to live in the “chopsticks” buildings of the four dishes and one soup! This was a small and beautiful village and the family who ran the inn helped us carry our luggage up to the inn and later down to the inn. When we arrived they cooked a dinner which was reasonable in price based on a local menu. And then during dinner, they told us that one of the family members will be running a free tour of the Tulous of four dishes one soup for us in which they explained the history of the building of the tulous, especially the oval shaped tulou. Our guide was very funny with his stories (he spoke in Chinese) and it was a lovely time seeing the artists and candy makers in the Tulous. I would highly recommend this place. We did have to bring our own towels (or at least we brought our own and they didn’t supply one), so maybe best to check."

You really have the feeling of living in a tulou and you have a little balcony with a splendid view of the courtyard and the roof.
You are awaken by the sounds of the birds in the morning, it is really a unique experience.
The only failings : the breakfast was a bit lacking + it can be weird for some people that the bathroom and the bedroom are not on the same floor.
They should also add a curtain to the window near the bed."

"The homestay itself is a renovated Tulou. It is antique and very experiential. It is a good choice for those who want to experience Tulou accommodation. Disadvantages: There is no hot water in the room. We booked a family room with two large beds, which accommodated 4 adults and 1 child. The room rate of 2099 during the Spring Festival is acceptable. But it is outrageous that there is no hot water. It’s okay that the whole family didn’t take a shower. The mountain spring water is very cold, and it’s hard to wash your face and hands. Secondly, because the room is a Tulou with a wooden structure, no matter upstairs or downstairs, inside or outside the room, as long as someone walks, you can feel the vibration and sound while lying in bed. Finally, breakfast is only prepared by two elderly people, and it is very slow. You may not be able to eat at 8:30, and a bunch of people are waiting for breakfast at the kitchen door. 😅😅😅"

The homestay is located in Taxia Village which is quieter and less commercialized in Tulou scenic areas that provide lots of privacy for the guests. The room and the building are located just next to the clear water stream. At night, I can even hear the stream of water flowing sounds. The villagers are very friendly to the tourists walking around. They are not pushy about selling any commercial products to tourists which is very contrast to the other commercializedTulou scenic areas. The owner/host is very hospitable, friendly, and helpful. This differentiates from the other hotel staying experience. I also got help on how to get around the Tulou scenic areas and where to get reasonable price restaurants from the host.

GGuest UserI originally planned a one-day trip to Taxia Village, but I stayed there for two days because of the boss's enthusiasm, sincerity, and the environment of the village. Friends who like quietness and leisure should not miss Taxia Village. The temperature is suitable, cool, very original and not very commercialized. The Firefly we stayed at this time is a store run by the couple with great care. We also let the boss arrange the food at Firefly. We told the boss how many people can eat and what the budget is, so we can go out and play with peace of mind. The meal in the picture only costs 200 yuan, tastes great and is very filling! ! What I like most is that there is a large platform to dry clothes, and you can lie on a chair and watch the stars in the sky at night! You can also see a lot of fireflies in June and July! A very satisfying stay! I will come again 🥰

The square at the entrance is very large, next to the waterwheel, and it is convenient for travel. The gurgling stream passes by the window, and the fragrance of flowers and birds is drunk in the house! The store manager is very enthusiastic, the service is thoughtful, and the warmth of returning to her mother's home, introducing the guide to play and change, the courtyard is ancient and quaint, and her family's golden thread lotus health tea is super delicious. I drank less water when I came out to play, and my throat hurt. The boss lady made a big pot of it and put it in a thermos cup. After drinking it, it was fine the next day [qiang][qiang] We arrived at noon and checked in, and the friend's family decided to come too. There are only 8 rooms in her house, which happened to be booked. They were not satisfied with the surroundings. In the evening, they were invited to eat together on the second-floor starry sky terrace. The dry steamed bamboo tube 🐔 tastes great, and the shiny fish scales are Q and green with gelatin. It's super delicious. The two children said it was delicious and ate an extra bowl of rice. The breakfast was also very rich. I will definitely stay at her house next time.

VVythicaWe stayed in Floral Luxury.1949 Guesthouse for 1 night. We booked Mufan room located on the ground floor as i am travelling with my elderly mom and carrying heavy luggage bags.
The guesthouse butler will contact you the night before your arrival to add them to Wechat for easy communication. They will share their hotel location and offer pick-up service at the train station if required.
Access to Yunshuiyao town is RMB90 perpax and free for those aged above 65 years old. Yunshuiyao is a scenic town area with 3 km long (2 - 3 hours walk). We hired a chinese speaking guide to accompany us to explain the history of Huaiyan building (square tulou), Hegui building (round tulou), and the town area. It cost RMB100.
The guesthouse is located inside Yunshuiyao town, behind the shop houses, in-between waterwheel and 2 trees (named as husband and wife) aged above 670 years old.
When we reached there at 2.30 pm, it was raining. The hotel staff immediately came out with an umbrella to pick us up and assist with the luggage.
The check-in is fast, and the access to the room is by password, which they will share in Wechat. Checkout is also very easy.
The hotel offered free fruits twice a day, afternoon and evening.
The basic bathroom essentials are complete, and they also provide bathrobes. The bed and pillows are very comfortable for a good night sleep. Luckily the aircond can change to warm mode as it was very cold on raining day.
There's a mini kids playground for children's. The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast set come with porridge and soya drink. Can topup if needed more. The in-house restaurant provides lunch & dinner with a la carte chinese foods menu.
The sky brightens at 5 am, while the sun rises high at 6.45am. If you are able to wake up early, this is the best time for you to revisit the town and tulou surrounding area for nice photos and cool breeze as only local people around. There's a roadside stall selling super long youtiao (equal to size of 2 youtiao) located near the stone bridge not far from guesthouse.
The whole Yunshuiyao town is covered with natural peebles pathway. Wear suitable shoes as it will be very slippery during the rainy day.

GGuest UserStaying at ”Nanjing Tulou Yunlai Mountain Villa”, the beautiful boss was very enthusiastic, and also upgraded the room, and told us the best route to visit the attractions. What made me feel the deepest was the boss's enthusiasm. Although breakfast, lunch and dinner are home-cooked dishes, they taste very good, and the ingredients are all green foods. DDarylAs it wasn't a busy time and we were staying for a whole week, on check they upgraded us to the Wooden Loft Family Room, which was quite nice. The room was comfortable with big windows and a nice view across the stream to the forest. It was great to have a washing machine and the washing machine had a dryer function as well so we could still dry our clothes when it was cloudy and cool. The smart toilet was a bit disappointing as the controller wasn't very responsive and the flush was very weak. The tub was nice though the water was not quite hot enough to make it comfortable. Most of all we enjoyed the courtyard area and the breakfast/restaurant area, especially the tea room. They are really well designed and organized and provide a nice space to relax and read and write. The breakfast was quite nice, they provide a serving size based on the number of people, though it was often not enough for us and we normally asked for another serving. They also brought a fruit and yogurt platter to the room in evenings which we also enjoyed. The location is convenient to walk down to the Yuchanglou Tulou in Xiabancun, though part of the way will be on the main road which can be busy with traffic. To get to other areas such as Tianluokeng and Taxiacun it is also possible to walk, though again sometimes you have to walk on the main road as there is no walking path or small side road. There is a tourist bus service that goes between the scenic spots and you can even flag them down in between though you are supposed to have purchased a transportation ticket first and that is not striaghtforward to get if you didn't get it in advance. So, most guests come with their own car or rent one. If arriving by train, while trip.com shows the Yongding and Longshan railway stations as the closest, actually the quickest and most convenient station is the one at Nanjing. Also, because the hotel is within the scenic area you do need to purchase tickets to enter, either online tickets or paper tickets at the gate.

The water heater has a large capacity, so you can take a comfortable bath without any problem. It has its own parking lot and is very convenient for self-driving. The location of the B&B is very close to the viewing platform of Four Dishes and One Soup, which has the advantage of seeing the lights and entering the village at night. The landlady usually drinks tea in the front hall. When you pass by and she is free, she will invite you to drink tea and chat with her. Great place, better stay at least a couple of nights to fully enjoy the tulou life.
Mr Huang and wife were amazing, some of the most hospitable people I’ve ever met. They cooked food for us and gave the best advices about exploring the surroundings.
If you have time, at sunset, walk up to the bus stop and find the little gap in the guardrail, it will bring you straight to the rice terraces. Can see the Tulou Complex from a different point of view!
