A young couple have renovated the historic Sundal hotel. In addition to modern facilities, the hotel is put back to its original style.Karoline and Harald are a perfect couple as hosts, promoters of local cider, fish, vegetables, of the history of the hotel, and Hardanger. Bondhusbreen ( the steepest glaciar drop) is in the view from the hotel. The location is perfect for mountain walks, glacier tours #Folgefonna Breførerlag - and kayaking. The sauna by the sea is perfect for relaxation after tours, and a swim in the sea - so is the garden, beautiful greenhouse and living rooms at Hardanger Fjord Lodge. Breakfast and dinner is presented in a most beautiful and delicious way, and is perfect matched with drinks.

The Hardanger Fjord Lodge is a unique location and to some extent a total piece of art. A recently redecorated small old and historic hotel was turned into a paradise where history comes back to life and where atmosphere is super comfortable and authentic. The furnishing and decoration in the whole house, but particularly in the dining area, in the greenhouse in the garden and other little retreats is extraordinarlily tasteful and so different from the normal „commercial“ style of ordinary hotels. The food is outstanding, usually all sourced from local providers, fish, meat or vegetables. And an outstanding and well thought through set of accompanying drinks for dinner, great ciders from the region or natural wines. And all wrapped in some descriptions by Caroline celebrating the history of the house and the region. Why „only“ four points, not five? It is actually a mix of the five points for all of the above and three for the limitations of the rooms. They are „original size“, i.e. very small, difficult to use with a bit more luggage. Secondly WC and shower are shared and although they are tastefully done and very clean it means that one takes some journeys across the corridor at night or in the morning. So clearly a recommendation for anyone ready to live with the limitation and wanting a unique experience that hardly any other hotel in the region could offer.

First let me say that this place is a true experience and the 2 dinners we had there were the best we had in Norway. The Michelin Star restaurant we ate at in Bergen wasn’t even as good as the food here. On top of that the whole dining experience is something to be remembered. The Inn itself is a very authentic experience, and most of the clientele are Norwegians, not tourists. Just be aware that the rooms don’t have private bathrooms and showers - those are down the hall, but are updated and modern. At first we weren’t thrilled about it, but it actually worked out fine. The bottom line is that this is an experience you won’t forget.

A beautiful hotel, restored and decorated with great attention to detail & history. Staying here is a unique experience... and you don't really want to leave. One of many highlights is the food preparation and presentation. With lots of love prepared, sustainable thoughts & tasty nuances. The choice of drinks for the dishes is also an experience. Many exciting flavours from the area and also the wines are specially selected and here, too, the idea of sustainability plays a major role. We will carry the memory of this trip in our hearts for a long time! Thank you Caroline, Harald, Eric, Frøya and Robert!

Thi is what we loved: -The hospitality is super. The couple who runs this place are awesome and very welcoming. -The place is very unique and beautiful! -The garden is so cozy, and the cute sauna was wonderful. -The bedrooms are like stepping back in time- even tough you have the most wonderful bed- and all you need. This is why it only gets a 3: -you have to buy dinner, it felt more like a demand than a choise. We tried to book without dinner, but on e-mail they said we should book dinner in order to get the whole experience. We tried to avoid it- but ended up booking. -when you do eat dinner they push drinks on you- alcoholic and non alcoholic. You feel like you have to buy the "whole package". They keep asking and pushing. -The dinner is not your ordinary cup of tea. We got a whole boiled onion as the first of 3 courses. That was not for us. We would have loved it if the dinner was more "normal".....
