Our stay was absolutely amazing! The amenities, the service, the price, the food, the views, entertainment, everything will make you feel like royalty! You are met in the lobby with a warm smile & greeting from Alexander Bell boy and checked -in by Margoth. In the lounge you are personally greeted by Ronald day serve and Miguel Angel(night serve) who were very personable. Breakfast was deliciously prepared by Gaudy the cook. Even the housekeeper makes the toilet tissue decorative. Ezequiel, the concierge, was very helpful and all of the staff seemed to never forget a face or name. I must say.. I really enjoyed my stay at the Sheraton.

The city view was the best part, we got picked up from the hotel for a day tour. Tour guide said we’re in the new buildings area but it’s still unsafe at night so don’t go walking around, but the hotel itself was five to ten minutes from everything else, in the day we did walk around and felt safe, the park is right next to it which was nice to see and of course the stadium, cleanliness and guest services were great accommodating, we had our anniversary dinner at their restaurant and it had great views but service was slow and food was only okay, could’ve/should’ve eaten somewhere else, the best part was the pool on the highest floor, the top four floors were apartments, but the pool is on the highest of their floor, the jacuzzi wasn’t warmed and they warmed us that it wasn’t, but the pool itself was nice to swim in, stayed there for a little over an hour before going to dinner, would definitely go book again

There is nothing to say about the environment. You can play golf on the prairie 🏌️♀️, and you can graze cattle freely. Standing on the balcony on the fifth floor, the breeze blows your face, and you feel comfortable physically and mentally; the breakfast is rich, and all kinds of meals can match your demands; There is no welcome bottled water, etc. This part can be improved in the future.

This hotel rocks! We stayed here the first night of our trip, and were welcomed by the kind staff and some of the FRESHEST and WARMEST TASTIEST free cookies upon check in. By the end of our stay one of our relatives literally hoarded the cookies, asking for 4-5 per day. The pool was very pretty, and the breakfast was so fancy, aesthetic and tasty! The rooms were nice and cool, very clean, and had a great selection of TV channels. On the last night of our trip, we had initially pre-planned to stay at this one hotel in the forrest, but our party decided to leave because of a number of concerning observations. We were all exhausted as it was the end of our trip, and needed somewhere to stay. Immediately everyone started chanting that they wanted to go back to the DoubleTree. We arrived and everyone sighed a relief, and we went to our warm beds with our cookies!

Good communication, via e-mail, prior to stay as I needed a refrigerator in my room. That was arranged in advance for me. Primarily due to traffic the property is about 30 minutes from the airport. Check-in was smooth. I think this is an older property, but my room was clean comfortable, no obvious wear and tear, renovated bathroom with standup shower and actual towel hooks (seems to be a rarity at many properties these days). All staff was very friendly. The property is somewhat misnamed (at least for a non-resident). The property is not within safe walking distance of the well known La Sabana park. By ‘safe’ I mean it appears that there is at least one major highway that has to be crossed. The grounds around the pool are well-maintained. Plenty of loungers, towels, a couple of covered beds available, but I didn’t see any umbrellas, so the pool was a non starter for me after although some shaded areas in the afternoon. Also, strong wifi in the pool area. The wifi just outside the lobby area was not great. But the wifi at the sports bar in the lobby area covered the front of the property. Note that a password is needed for both the hotel and the sports bar. I did get a takeaway dinner from the restaurant. Food was substantial. A bit strange in that I couldn’t charge it to my room, but if I ordered the same via room service, charging to my room would have been OK. Not a big deal. The breakfast buffet, which I tried once was good with made to order eggs, albeit a bit pricey I thought. The sports bar food was OK, weak house alcoholic drinks. There is a walkable neighborhood behind the hotel. The property uses Gold’s Gym for its gym (free of charge for guests). There is also a sports bar, a Denny’s, a Subway, a supermarket, a ******, and a pharmacy all within a minute walk of the property. Maybe there is a tennis court in the vicinity? I saw many women (but not as a group) with tennis rackets walking through the property. It is a no smoking property, including outdoors. That is a plus. Also, my floor had a filtered water and filtered ice machine. Uber into downtown San Jose works well, but allow for traffic. One trip took me about 15 minutes, returning from the same location, midday took 45 minutes, Plan accordingly. Normally, I’d give a 5*, but in this case just a 4*. I am a IHG Platinum, asked for 1 PM checkout (one hour late). Front desk said all arranged (I re-verified on the morning of checkout day). I had a meeting at noon and didn’t want to be interrupted. Front desk assured me that housekeeping would be advised accordingly. Sure enough, housekeeping was knocking on my door at 12:05 asking when I was leaving the room. The lack of communication between departments is very frustrating. This was a multi-night stay for me as I needed to be in the vicinity for a bit. With the exception of the housekeeping knock prior to my agreed upon checkout time, no complaints.

The staff was very friendly, especially Sylvia from from front desk. She set up my Marriott membership so I can earn points and also helped by directing me to their laundry room, instead of looking for a local laundromat. The hotel is small and so conveniently near restaurants and a mall. I would come back again.

this hotel is very confusing to locate. there is no sign except for a banner on a fence. this hotel is attached to a Holiday inn which makes it more confusing. they literally share a courtyard and the buildings are attached. when you pull in there is nothing directing you to a lobby, no signs, luckily an employee was standing outside and they explained where to go. we have a large group of 22 and a total of 6 rooms reserved. originally we are told the 6 people checking in for each room need their passports, then he changes his mind and decides everyone needs to show their passports which i have never done before in any hotel in Costa Rica out of all the trips and hotels we stayed at. they take all our passports and write down all the names and passport numbers for all 22 guests which i was very uncomfortable with. we were flying out very early in the morning so we had no choice. There were 3 people working the front desk at some point a 4th guy showed up, 2 of the clerks were friendly but the main guy was condescending and rude! we finally get our keys, only 1 room was given the complimentary bottle of wine. the rooms were dirty, dark, and smelled awful, a mix of paint, mold, and chemicals. the rooms look nothing like the pictures advertised, im sure many years ago they did but now theyre dirty and outdated. our balcony door did not close, it was held open by the chain lock but the door knob would not latch so the door remained slightly open. bugs were flying in so my husband rigged the door to keep it closed, not locked just closed enough to keep bugs out. we went downstairs to pick up some dinner leaving our 17 year old taking a shower. we had requested towels since there was only 2 and 4 of us, i guess they decided to let themselves in while we were out, my son heard the door and assumed it was us returning until several minutes later someone knocked on the bathroom door! they started speaking to my son in spanish which he does not speak, he was totally freaked out! why would you stay in the room if you heard the shower on?! then he doesnt even leave! my son said it was several minutes later that he finally left the room!! what the hell was he doing in our room for so long?!!! My sister was given someone else's room and when she went down to let them know the room was locked they insisted she wasnt using the key card correctly so they walked her back up, tried the card but the door was locked with the safety pin so it only opened slightly, the guy then tried pushing the door open with his body when a gentleman appears inside startled from being woken up to someone trying to break into his room! my sister was embarrassed, explained what happened and apologized. HOW DOES A FRONT DESK NOT KNOW WHAT ROOMS THEY HAVE ALREADY FILLED?!?! completely unacceptable! DO NOT STAY HERE!!! there are so many options nearby find anywhere else to stay.

The landlord’s wife was very kind and helpful, she helped me arrange my trip to Costa Rica, and I thank her very much.
My trip in Costa Rica was very enjoyable. There is a local restaurant next to this hotel. It is very delicious. After I return to China, I will try to make those three dishes. One is red bean rice, one is yak beef, and the other is pepper side dishes. They are all very delicious. Especially suitable for fat reduction fitness meal

JJiujiu (SCZ)The room was big, clean, quiet, and the breakfast was great!
PPernod_MeeshaWe stayed twice at Bougainvillea, 3 nights at the start of our birding tour, and one night at the end. It is a great introduction to Costa Rica and birding. We really loved the garden out the back, which had plenty of new birds for us. The buffet breakfast in the morning was probably the best on our trip (the only one that had a good muesli for me!) and the restaurant catered well for gluten free and vegetarian diets, with enough variety when staying a couple of days. The sandwiches are highly recommended. The rooms are spacious. There is a security box that works, and WiFi is flawless. There is a fan in the rooms but no air conditioning, and on the hot days we were there I did find the rooms a little too hot in the evenings when trying to sleep. It does cool down to around 20 degrees overnight, but that is a little hot for me. Service from all staff was excellent. They do money exchange at reception and help organise taxis for going in to San Jose. This hotel is very popular with western birders arriving in the country and it lives up to its reputation. Highly recommended.
GGuest UserFirstly if you’re considering staying in this hotel perhaps have a look at its reviews on booking dot com where is has a 9/10 rating from 391 reviews. For some reason it’s listing on TripAdvisor seems to be minimal. We spent a night there as a group of three while transiting through San Jose. PROS - ROOMs/COMMON AREAS - This is more a guesthouse than hotel. The common spaces are particularly large - huge kitchen, large living room with tv and couches, fish tank, resident hedgehog, small workout area, garden, etc. Would be a particularly nice place for someone staying in San Jose for an extended period as it feels like a home not a hotel. Our room also was nice. Comfortable beds. Clean. No air conditioning but San Jose is at such elevation that this doesn’t matter. - LOCATION - There was ampm convenience store only five minutes walk away. Not too far from bus station - short Uber ride. - WIFI - Worked well. - SERVICE - friendly. - SECURITY- suburb felt safe. Metal door at entrance. Room locked. - VALUE - only 43USD for the night which was very reasonable. Was hard to find budget-mid range options in San Jose. CONS - Bathroom situation is a little hectic. There are two showers but they are in the same room with some frosted glass so don’t really offer much privacy. As a result people lock the door to access both and so you can a bit of a line up in the morning.
I cannot say one bad thing about this place. First class all the way. Beautiful rooms, rain shower heads, best beds and pillows ever, great and kind beautiful staff. The guys at the front desk became very vested in us, giving us info, storing our bags, always dressed perfectly, and always carrying themselves professionally. The breakfast buffet in the morning was great! The hotel is located in a quiet part of town, yet very close to bus routes, major highways, groceries, and parks. Guests have access to the pool next door which was small and cozy. There us a small gym downstairs with a few machines and weights. And of course the small ****** around the corner. A great value!
TTessa_assetUndiscovered gem of a hotel near San Pedro.
Pros: We were looking for a place on the lower end of the price spectrum that was a one night romantic getaway for two, that I could also use my free trip coins at toward the cost of the room. Preferably including breakfast and a swimming pool with jacuzzi 😉 Not much to ask!
We booked one of the cheaper rooms on the ground floor.
Before check in we took an Uber to San Pedro mall to do some essential shopping and see a movie. Then we checked in and I relaxed in the jacuzzi under the San José night sky while my husband enjoyed a full workout in the gym/weights room. TV with cable was great for my husband who enjoyed the football while I enjoyed the hot shower and relaxed in the bed afterwards. We had an amazingly comfortable sleep and a delicious breakfast in the morning of gallo pinto, fresh tropical fruits, freshly squeezed watermelon juice and hot coffee. A generous check out time of 12pm meant we had more than enough time to get our things together and leave when it suited.
Cons: Not many cons at this price point and value. The guy at the desk was a bit weird when we asked him for a second glass for water as there was only one in the room but not a big deal. We also had to ask him for the TV remote. The towels were a bit small like a mini dress on me after my shower. But good quality (with a third extra towel for the jacuzzi) and high quality bed linen. It also is in a slightly rough looking neighborhood but this is not a problem if you travel to and from the hotel by Uber or use a hire car (which you can park privately inside the property).
Overall impression: The other photos on trip.com and similar booking sites do not do this hotel justice - it looks far better in person. It has real character since it is a restored historic hotel from an era bygone, but that is why everything is such high quality from the bed linen to the floor tiles. Everything is also in good shape and freshly painted. There a little hidden nooks around the hotel that make it very charming. The breakfast area is lovely and the jacuzzi, pool and water slide were a real highlight. We WILL be back.
I’ve stayed in some pretty low end places and this is one of the worst. Our room had no windows. I’ve never heard of such a thing for a hotel. One of the elevators was broken, we were given half a roll of toilet paper, the carpet was dirty, and there was zero hot water. Yes, this place is conveniently located and sure, it was quiet, but it’s a total rip off. Coffee downstairs in the morning was $9 USD. Our key stopped working and we had to get it reprogrammed. I’ve stayed in better hostels.
GGuest UserHotel Balmoral charges you in full on your first day and will not allow for any subsequent changes. I reserved for 10 days and was told by management that they would only issue a voucher credit to be used within the next 30 days. This policy should be stated upfront so people making reservations know all terms. Tourism business is down and they appear desperate for business but their policies prevent you from ever returning again. This establishment appears only willing to provide discounts and incentives solely to the hispanic community.
HhugswimsI spent three nights at the Costa Rica Tennis Club Hotel and hated to leave. Based on some of the reviews, I was hesitant to book but because it has a 25m pool I decided to give it a chance, and booked for one night. The staff was friendly, the room was updated, and clean, and the sports facilities were fantastic so I booked for two more nights. I am a swimmer and loved having an 8 lane competition pool available for daily training. I also used the gym which had a great variety of machines and weights. There were courts for every type of racquet sport, a basketball court, pong ponf, a bowling alley, a second pool, steam room and sauna, massage therapists, a pro shop; and more! There also is a nice sports bar where the complimentary breakfast is served. If b be you take it out in the patio you can watch folks running. Online skating, cycling and horseback riding. To top it off, the price was under $60 per night. I would think a day pass to a club like this would be around $30+ so this is a great deal. If/when I return to San Jose I definitely will plan on seating here.
