Kumu Beach

This place will forever hold a special place in my heart as my fiancé chose Kumu Beach Hotel to surprise me with a proposal during our stay here! We stayed for 3 nights and honestly didn't want to leave. Of course the engagement made the hotel extra sentimental for us but I have to say the hospitality and hotel itself were outstanding! The staff were incredible - super warm and attentive. (I later found out just how helpful they had been with accommodating and organizing the proposal with my partner too). Kumu Beach did not disappoint with their Menu either, personally felt it was the best food we had across our tour of Sri Lanka, I'm still dreaming about the prawn tikka wrap I ate for lunch! The breakfast and dinner were incredible too throughly enjoyed being able to try different dishes during our stay, which served a selection of local Sri Lankan food and western cuisine which were all exquisite. They were also very understanding of my partners coeliac disease and were able to easily make changes to the menu for him. To top all of this, let's talk about its location and landscape: JUST WOW! it was a blessing to be surrounded by its diversity, the sound of waves crashing every morning/throughout the night and birds singing. We stayed in room 5 with an incredible view over the private beach, which felt very remote, there was often only my finance and I on the beach which made it feel extremely private indeed. Everything about the Hotel, from its location, food and interior design were picture worthy! Thank you to the staff who made the stay just PERFECT!

This is a fantastic exclusive hotel. Only 10 rooms with excellent service from all the staff who spoke good English but not intrusive. The rooms all have sea views and feel private as at slightly different angles. Ours had a 4 poster bed. The room had a huge bathroom. Also a selection of teas and a proper coffee machine with fresh milk in the fridge. The food is fantastic, starting with a 4 course breakfast, any manner of light snacks for lunch and a good evening selection. The chef came round personally most evenings to check everybody was happy. Outside there is a small lawned area and a lovely infinity pool overlooking the beach. Unfortunately when the tide is coming or going the sea is a bit dangerous to swim in because of the undercurrent, but relatively OK for a good swimmer and at other times. The beach has lovely white sand and there was nobody on it even at height of season, perfect for a morning or evening stroll when the temperature a bit lower. We really appreciated the 5-6 pm cocktail hour watching the sun set and all drinks free. Also afternoon tea is free if requested. There is a spa and the massage I had was excellent. The hotel is an hours drive from Galle which for us was a little far for more sightseeing. There is really no village or town to wander around so it is a bit isolated. The hotel does organise various trips if desired. We felt rested and pampered at this hotel at the end of our holiday.

My husband and I spent 6 nights at Kumu Beach and loved it so much we didn’t want to leave! This small boutique hotel has only 10 rooms, we stayed in room 7 with an ocean view. The room was spacious, comfortable, well equipped with a large bathroom, the view from the bed was just fabulous! All of the staff here are so friendly and helpful, as were all of the staff at the Teardrop Hotels that we had the pleasure of staying at, nothing is too much trouble for anyone. The chef, Indika, is a credit to the hotel, he interacts with guests daily and is clearly proud and passionate about the food that is served. One evening he cooked us a Kottu Roti as a special request (off menu) and it was delicious. All of the food including breakfast, lunch and dinner is plentiful, tasty and well presented. The only criticism is that there are sometimes not enough shaded areas for outside eating during breakfast and lunchtime, a few more parasols are required. The hotel is located on a wonderful, almost deserted beach and is close to other restaurants etc should you wish to venture out. Afternoon tea and cake/cookies are served daily as are complimentary G&T’s, wine, beer etc during social hour which brings guests together in the gardens. This hotel is truly exceptional and if you like small hotels I cannot recommend it enough!
