Stayed here overnight. We checked in and welcomed by friendly, helpful staff. We ate in the pub, the ambience was very good. Service was very good on a very busy evening. Staff we very friendly and helpful. The food was locally sourced ingredients, seasonal and well balanced flavours. This was originally a coaching inn serving weary travellers good food and comfotable lodgings. It is still achieving that to a very good standard. This is a very good choice for ramblers and exploring The Peak District.

Great little hotel. Rooms a little dated but that’s what I expected, comfortable beds nice and clean. staff & food very good. Book direct to get Chatsworth house tickets included as well as breakfast and discount on first night meal. Farm shop nearby was an added bonus. Beware you will spend a lot on the delicious food

Stopped in for a drink at this pub during a walk through the beautiful Peak District, expecting something a little more refined and inclusive, especially as it’s owned by Chatsworth House, which frankly should know better. Unfortunately, what we encountered was an appalling excuse for a menu—particularly if you’re vegetarian. It's 2025, not 1970. How on earth is there still no vegetarian Sunday roast option? How difficult is it to throw together some well-roasted seasonal veg and a Yorkshire pudding? Or how about a nut roast or a vegetable Wellington—options that are now standard in many pubs that actually bother to cater for more than just meat-eaters? Instead, we were offered the lazy, uninspired fallback that so many places cling to when they’ve given zero thought to vegetarians: risotto and oyster mushrooms. Bland, tasteless, and utterly unoriginal. It’s like they Googled “vegetarian dish” and picked the first thing that came up. No effort, no flavour, no excuse. Given the stature of the estate that owns this pub, the menu should reflect not just quality, but a sense of progress and inclusivity. Vegetarianism isn’t a niche lifestyle anymore—it’s mainstream, and to ignore that in 2025 is not just lazy, it’s disgraceful. It’s a total failure to keep up with the times. Vegetarianism isn’t a rarity—it’s a huge and growing demographic. To ignore that, especially at a high-profile, estate-owned venue, is nothing short of embarrassing. Your menu is eye-wateringly expensive, yet somehow manages to offer far less than other pubs in the area. Many nearby establishments provide broader, better-thought-out menus with excellent vegetarian and vegan options—and at a lower price. You might want to take a leaf out of the Cheshire Cheese pub in Hope, where they’ve gone the extra mile with a separate menu dedicated to vegans. That’s the level of care and consideration diners should be able to expect in 2025.

I visited here on a solo trip from Nottingham as I fancied a walk around around Chatsworth House whilst my partner was working - luckily they managed to squeeze me in which was great! The food, service and everything in between was 10/10. The staff & host were so friendly & welcoming. I had roast lamb which was cooked perfectly & the crumble was the best I’ve had in any restaurant! Would 100% recommend to anyone visiting the local area - a really welcoming/warm & tranquil place to eat

We stayed at the Pilsley Inn in order to visit Chatsworth House. The inn is walking distance from the farm shop and from the house itself. Dinner and breakfast were delicious and the staff took great care of us.

I would normally give this hotel an excellent but we now have reservations. The staff are lovely and the rooms delightful. It is very welcoming and we thoroughly enjoyed the meals especially breakfast which was first class. A very attractive bar serving very good real ale is also a bonus . Despite all this we feel that the dog friendly policy is far too liberal. At our evening meal a lady had a dog on her knee next to us and left it on the seat whenever she stood up . We were also astonished that at breakfast dogs were also fed and again one such dog was on a knee the whole time .Apart from the hygiene issue yapping dogs in a small room certainly spoil any ambience. There needs to be an area where guests can eat food free of our canine friends .

The staff here are incredibly helpful and friendly. The food was gorgeous. We did several walks from our front door and proximity to the farm shop is a major bonus. The bed was so comfortable and we slept really well. I’ll be back soon!
