About 9 years of experience with this hotel. Visited often and until this year always had good experiences, that's why I've been so often. Unfortunately, the experiences of the last 2x, this year 2024, are a lot less, with the most recent being extremely disappointing. We had the more luxurious room. The carpet was dirty and the climate control in the room did not work, it made us sick. Safe was broken, young man couldn't get it to work and called for the handyman, at the reception he asked if we were really going to use it... duh, otherwise you wouldn't ask for it of course. The dinner was quite stripped down for the prices you pay and the service was not really friendly. The table next to us had a complaint about the food but nothing was done about it. "I can pass it on, but nothing will be done with it," it was said. Special. The swimming pool and wellness were dirty. Very slippery floors in the sauna area and a very dirty swimming pool, dirty floor and a lot of dirt, for example a gigantic strand of hair floating in the water, very dirty. There is also a wing where asylum seekers are housed. It seems like a lot is being done to hide this. On the parking side we saw some people come out of the door and sit on the balcony, on the garden side there was no one outside... Be transparent about it! We have no problem with the reception of asylum seekers, but as a tourist you pay a lot of money for a weekend away, so be transparent about the fact that there is a wing where these people "live", and also about the circumstances, because it is best a strange sensation that gives you the idea that those people are housed there under heavy restrictions. No more Hotel Assen for us. Quite a shame because it used to be such a nice hotel.

Our second time out we had to stay here again out of necessity, because we had our 5 chihuahuas with us, for which we had to pay 15.00 each. Someone with 1 or 2 large dogs pays much less, there are plenty of hotels that charge half or even less for our very neat dogs out of goodwill, but not here. Room reasonable, but very noisy, we asked for a quiet place and then they put us against the stairwell, so we didn't think about it. You are not allowed to enter the restaurant with dogs in a stroller, but you are allowed in the hallway with loud music and unrest. I had a starter of sweet potato mousse, which had corn kernels on it, which I assumed I could eat. not so, I broke my tooth on them, they were rock hard, and the only thing that came out, sorry, but we are not responsible for it!! Why? You serve it and you can rest assured that you won't break your tooth on it! And then also have the court paid!! So I didn't do that! 'On check-out day you are not allowed to use the swimming pool and sauna if you have to wait, we have had better experiences with that...The first time in Assen the room was very dirty...Now this again...For us, never Assen again .

Great room, free upgrade so absolutely satisfied with that. However, something went wrong at check-in. We had a late check in (12:15 am) and the night auditor told us that breakfast was from 7am to 11am. At 10.20 am we arrived at the breakfast room and there we learned that breakfast was until 10.30 am. Gone are our relaxed feelings! The lady was unfriendly and said "that's just the way it is" and she did not make us feel welcome anymore. In the breakfast room we felt rushed and the coffee machines were turned off. When we asked an employee if we could have a quiet breakfast, they did not reassure us and the employee said "it is true that it is until 10.30 am. Because we could not even get a cup of tea anymore, we went to a responsible 1st employee who also said "it is stated in the elevators". People, that was not our point at all. We understand that the night auditor made a mistake had said the wrong end time (these were strangers of us who were in the same boat). The point is that you still make the guest feel welcome to move to the lobby, there is coffee and tea, you can just use it." Now in the end we were not treated kindly by 3 employees, we did not enjoy the pricey breakfast, this feels like a hangover, but also it is not collegial not to resolve a colleague's apparent mistake. After this disappointing experience, we were unable to enter the hotel room and had to return to reception. There the situation was explained and the receptionist replied that it "must be a misunderstanding because the night auditor has been working there for 100 years". No, it wasn't a misunderstanding. It was a mistake. And that in at least 3 rooms. "Oh, then I believe you." Wow, what a relief! We did get a late check out until 12 noon. There is still a lot to learn here, this is not how you treat your guests. Fortunately, these are exceptions, as a rule we are definitely satisfied with Van der Valk Hotels.
