Called into this establishment for lunch myself, wife and daughter, can only say I should have checked the reviews. Drinks were ordered and were reasonably priced. A lovely sunny day so we sat outside to nice views. That was the highlight of the visit. Menu was limited but there was something for all (if they had it). The specials board listed 2 burgers one with fries and one with chips. I ordered the special with chips my wife and daughter ordered sandwiches and a side of chips. I was then informed they were out of Burgers. On the menu they recommended the Pies Galore all home made. I therefore ordered the steak and kidney with veg and chips. The sandwiches arrived and were what you would expect from a pub and the girls said they were fine. Shortly after my food arrived it was the saddest plate of food I have ever been served in 60 years of eating in pubs and restaurants. The pie was approximately 4 inches square and three quarters of an inch thick quarter inch of base pastry quarter inch of filling and a quarter inch of pastry on top I cut of the top to reveal 8 very small cubes of beef and no kidney. The side edge of the pastry was solid and my knife wouldn't cut it, it was inedible. The veg consisted of frozen carrots and green beans (barely) warmed up in the microwave. When ordering we stipulated chips as opposed to fries what were served were fries that appeared to have been cooked in oil. A jug of gravy arrived that had the consistency and look of brown frog spawn it was to say the least disgusting. The saddest point was when a young girl with special needs (Downes) came out and asked if the food was alright, we said it was very poor at which point she giggled and left. I in no way include this young lady in the negative points of this review, she was clearly doing the bidding of the management. My wife then went indoors and spoke to management who made a number of excuses about staff, the kitchen, they had run out of chips, and said the pies were home made. It was suggested they sack the Chef. Other than an apology, there was no recompense for the poor service and even poorer food. Had we caught them on an off day? No on checking reviews later that day this tended to be the norm for this pubs service and food. Do Not Eat Here.

Further to my November 21 review, it is clear from the picture posted by Geoff H in June 24 that the hand basin in my picture and the one in his are one and the same. The owner commented that it is not easy to get a plumber quickly in the Dale's but 3 years????

We went for an evening meal as we stopped in Bainbridge. The food is reheated. Pies and Lasagna's were cold in the middle and a side dish of watery green beans and carrots out the the freezer was served on the side. £19.50 for a pie that is reheated and still cold is not worth the money. I would recommend other others close that are cheaper and much better food.

Honestly this is possibly the worst food I’ve ever had put down in front of me! DO NOT EAT HERE! Staff are friendly and obviously embarrassed serving the food leaving the kitchen! Ordered 5 roast beef dinners, not one thing on the plate had been roasted! The beef is cooked and sliced at the butchers down the road apparently! Anyway basically just sandwich beef not a Sunday roast. Veg on the plate! All frozen, peas carrots and green beans! Obviously being in Yorkshire you’d expect fresh Yorkshire puddings! Well no such luck just frozen ones from bid food or brakes! Now a meal like this has its place, in a prison I’d suggest and this is where these owners belong charging £19 for that muck. I didn’t even let the waiter put it down in front of me once I saw the rest of the tables arriving! I told him I wouldn’t waste my money on that trash and sent it back to kitchen. Obviously cashing in on the tourist market just avoid at all costs! It’s the staff I feel sorry for as they will all soon be out of a job at that rate

This is one of the oldest pubs in Yorkshire, one wonders how the hell it fell into such a state. The moment we walked through the front door I knew it was a mistake to book this place, it was totally grim and filthy... The room smelt of damp, the bathroom barely usable. The breakfast was just rank..

Dreadful, dirty, cold, and the food is revolting! So expensive and clearly just microwaved bilge. Cheap, low quality ingredients badly cooked. The toilets were filthy and stank. Just keep on driving, don't stop and definitely don't waste your time and money. The place is a dump and how they stay in business is beyond words, an absolute con.

Having dinner with my very picky-eating American family. We’ve been in the UK for a week and this was absolutely the best meal we’ve had so far. The lamb pie is not to be missed. The Yorkshire pudding was also delicious. This spot is fantastic. The vegetables on the plate were lovely (as healthy eaters, we appreciate any vegetables we can get) and the potatoes were delicious. The dining room is so cozy and the service was extremely attentive.

OMG where do I start, worst place I have ever stayed in. Place was filthy, room had paper hanging off walls, water stained ceiling, and sink in ensuite had been bodged to replace damage. Glasses and cutlery dirty, breakfast uncooked and cold. Staff not particularly friendly. Booked for 3 nights, left after 2, absolutely disgusted.

First, the good points: the staff were helpful, friendly and accomodating. The sheets and towels were clean. But oh my, the place desperately needs a deep clean and spruce up - it was quite depressing. The carpets were grubby, the crockery and cutlery was dirty, the juice glasses at breakfast were covered in a film of grease and the whole place smells of old food. The menu is quite limited and while the pie I had was OK, all of our food had been nuked and had dried-up edges from overcooking. One meal looked as if if had been dropped from a height onto the plate! And by no means cheap either when you compare the food to other, better, places nearby. I don't know if the place is just too far gone and expensive to refurb; it's a sizeable building which must cost a fortune to maintain and would be eye-wateringly expensive to gut and smarten up. But it just had an air of desperation about it, and I couldn't imagine wanting to go back under any circumstances. I feel sorry writing this as the staff try their best so I hope it gets some investment. It's literally in the heart of the dales and could be so much better.
