Downtown Inn

Great location, friendly staff. Parking is a nightmare! But worth it because once parked you can walk to most everything to do in downtown Asheville.

I was fooled by reviews saying this hotel is "quaint." It's extremely run down. Your worst hint is the grimy elevator. In the room, I found dried food on the floor (something with noodles), some lights didn't work, broken tile in bath, ripped shower curtain. The AC would not adjust, so I froze all night. The lobby looks like a hospital waiting room, but with drapes that need to be torn down. The pierced check-in girl popped gum in my face. She couldn't recommend a place to eat after 9:30 (she said most places were closed), yet there was a pub with a band a few steps away that was open until midnight. Any complaints about the room are met with "It's an older hotel." Noise from motorcycles revving at the stoplight will keep you awake. This was the worst hotel experience I've ever had, and a terrible introduction to the wonderful city of Asheville. For $10 more a night I transferred to the upscale Doubletree.

Budget and location, location, location!

This could have been so much better. When we got to the hotel, the small parking lot was full. My wife went in to inquire about additional parking and the gentleman behind the counter told her that when the lot was full, you're on your own. We parked up the street in a lot and came back to check in. At the desk, another person had arrived. No name tag but very pregnant. She proceded to tell us that there was indeed free parking in a lot behind the the motel. Not what the man had told my wife. We checked in and were given a different rate that we had booked online. I showed the lady my reservation and she told me that they had a new person working logging in the stays and they had made a mistake. She changed the rate back to what we booked for. We went to our room only to find it was not the King we had booked. Back to the desk to learn they were out of Kings but the lady worked with another customer to get us our room. Another positive that she had provided. The room it's self was ok. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. When we checked out, the red headed bearded man from the day before was back on duty. I asked for a receipt and he stared at me like I had 2 heads. After several minutes of being stared at while waiting for the receipt, it appeared. It only showed $0. Not a receipt but a balance due. I couldn't stand the idea of another staring contest so I simply asked the man for the total amount and finally got it. Some people, like the lady, have good customer service skills and represent their product well. Others, well, should probably look for different career paths......
