Egli Hotel

I love this hotel in every way: from the warm welcome till the warm goodbye and everything in between. The home made breakfast was delicious, Kostas and the Marias were very helpful and informative. The room was charming, the history of the villa interesting. The location couldn't be better: in the heart of the town.

This place is perfect. Maria, Costa,Dimitrios (family owners) and Maria (at reception) go above and beyond to make your stay delightful. Costa works their farm and Maria cooks or preserves most of the ingredients from the farm for an outstanding Greek breakfast which was included in our price. The location is very good, with just a few step to the main part of town. Just a short walk down this beautiful road is a great place for swimming off the smooth rocks. There is a main sandy beach at the bottom of a steep staircase on one side of the isthmus with waves and another sandy beach down a not so steep set of stairs to a calm Sandy beach. There are many paths for hiking. The town itself is very well kept with lots of Neoclassical architecture and lane ways winding their way in a grid like fashion. The food is superb and the people are so welcoming and laidback. The rooms are spotless. There is a beautiful marble counter levered marble staircase up to them. My bag was carried up for me. Each room of the 9 rooms is slightly different. Ours had a balcony overlooking a leafy lane way leading down to the main drag which is blocked off from cars at this point. We caught a bus from the ferry to the depot which was a very short distance down to the hotel. We used the stairs down and an easy path with no stairs on our return. We left our bags at the hotel and caught the 2:15pm bus to the ferry, thus maximising our time in this place. The museum is outstanding… don’t miss it Such an outstanding visit made so much better because of the warm friendly family and staff. W

For the second of our 2 weeks on Andros (the first week was in Batsi), we moved to the Chora and stayed in the Egli Hotel. The Egli is a converted former sea captain’s mansion and retains a lot of its former character. The building is in a prime location right on the main pedestrian street and close to the bus station. Our room (no 5) had a double, Greek-style balcony and overlooked the street providing a wonderful viewing point in the evening as the street came alive both with locals and tourists. Kostas and Maria who manage the hotel are extremely welcoming. Maria’s home made pies and jams at breakfast set you up for the day! Another Maria speaks fluent English, French and some Italian. She is a wealth of local knowledge regarding which beach to go to, places of interest to visit and where to eat. She is also extremely friendly and welcoming. Staying in the Chora is a completely different experience from staying in Batsi, where we stayed the first week. The Chora is older, with more traditional buildings and is full of character. There are also 2 museums, The Museum of Modern Art and The Archaeological Museum, and both are worth visiting. There is a lovely mix of locals and tourists wandering the Chora in the evening after the sun has set. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Chora and would highly recommend staying in the Egli Hotel. Note: the Egli is an old building and access to the rooms is via a circular staircase which is not the easiest to maneuver with luggage…..
