Our group of 9 photographers stayed for 3 nights at Valley Resort and it was most pleasant. The guest house (which is actually much larger than it sounds) is a bit outside town, so you drive through agricultural areas and have a view of Jakar Dzong across the fields. It was pretty quiet, only one barking dog in the distance at night. The rooms are quite large and comfortable. Mine, on the ground floor across the courtyard from Reception and the restaurant, was paneled in wood and felt very homey. There were two beds, a small sitting area, and another separate sitting area (like an enclosed porch) outside the front door. Everything looked and felt very clean. My one problem with the room is that the water in the tank was either too cold (because the fuse kept flipping on the water heater and had to be reset) or too hot (because it was turned up to the max, which I remedied after nearly scalding my hand the first time). Also, the wifi is spotty and sometimes I had to go to the restaurant to use it; even then, sometimes there was no connection or it was dropped. However, compared to my first visit to Bhutan 19 years ago, this was heaven for even having a nice hotel and wifi at all. The staff is very friendly and eager to help at all times. Sangay Phuntsho, the owner/manager, was always around supervising and meeting with guests, making sure everything was up to snuff. The food was good and plentiful, and there were enough non-spicy choices for those of us (like me) who don't like chilies. The Valley Resort is a good choice when you visit Bumthang, and a great location for exploring the surrounding valleys and attractions.
