Small Luxury Hotels of the World - Canal House

Dirty room. Previous occupants medical records under the bed. Air system didn’t work. Unfriendly staff. A very tired hotel. On our arrival it was nice to receive a welcome letter from the manager addressed to me and my partner. The only problem was that my partner is not a Mrs. but a Mr. Clumsy.

The room was hardly usable due to the lack of air conditioning. Since the hotel is located directly in the departure corridor of an airport (with a takeoff every 95 seconds), keeping the windows open is also not a solution. The staff refused to accept that the absence of air conditioning is a serious flaw of the room. They claimed that the hot weather was responsible for the sauna-like temperatures inside. They did not want to admit, that an air condition is a basic requirement of a Hotel in this price range. During the conversation, they tried to make us believe that a regular table fan is considered "air conditioning." The service attitude of a particular reception staff member was also very challenging. Moreover, the rental price of a hotel bicycle reflects their incorrect attitude towards five-star hospitality. The second star i could give to the hotel because, apart from that, the room's layout and furnishings are exceptionally nice. Additionally, after lengthy discussions, the staff offered us a late check-out. If you are looking for a luxurious hotel that meets the expected standards for this price range, then this hotel is NOT the right choice.

We arrived for a 6 night stay at Canal House and were very excited. Check in was great and everyone was kind. We were shown our room and we realized there is no air conditioning with only one working window out of three. Also, if you get the kitchen room you can hear everyone walk over your room because that is where everyone eats so it is quite loud. There were two small windows in the bathroom but our room was next to a garden common area where everyone sits. So pretty much impossible to leave the windows open to use the toilet or shower. We decided quickly we could not stay here with a/c and no real privacy. So, we told the staff we are sorry and just couldn’t stay here during a heat wave without working windows. This is the tough part of the experience so far is tha Canal House wants to keep two nights of stay which is that value is close to 1400 dollars and we stayed there for 30 minutes. I have emailed the manager but no respond yet. I feel like for this price point all the rooms should have working windows and some type of a/c system. I expected to lose one night of stay but I think two nights is being a little greedy by Canal House. Beautiful Hotel but can’t stay here during a heatwave.

The hotel was quaint, with a great location. Lots of close by restaurants and genially helpful staff.

Great hotel. Very comfortable beds, fantastic staff, good breakfast, awesome location, walking distance to lots of gorgeous shops and restaurants.

What a disastrous experience ! We arrived at the hotel, and noted that the “ lobby/bar “ was very hot, whilst waiting to check in. We asked if the hotel aircon was working and were assured that it was. However, when we arrived in our room, we found it to be unbearably hot ! It was only at this point that the staff advised that the aircon was not working and there was a maintenance person looking at it. We felt very blindsided. We were later told that the aircon had apparently been fixed. Trust us, it was NOT ! The room remained unbearably hot for the following few days. In addition, the breakfast served was ‘basic “ at best . I would not even call it a simple continental breakfast. In summary, DO NOT stay here in any month that is even slightly warm. You are paying a LOT of money for a VERY DISAPPOINTING experience .
