Amsterdam Canal Hotel

This hotel is my favourite whenever i go to amsterdam, near the canals, near to the shops and they have a happy hour of free drinks and snacks!

Nice location, very nice staff, nice breakfast area next to river. No escalator and thus a problem if you carry lots of luggage or trolley.

This is not a 4 star hotel! Dont be fooled by pictures of air conditioners in the rooms- they dont work. Being on the 2nd floor up, the room was stuffy and very very hot on arrival- a day of only 25 degrees. On arrival we were given a room in the property next door. Reception is in one building with some rooms & more rooms in property next door. It was frustrating to have carried our 2 heavy bags up the front steps and then the stairs into reception only to be then directed to our room next door- 2 nd floor with steep twisting staircases! There was a basic pedestal fan in the room but we were forced to sleep with the windows open for fresh air- street is incredibly lively all night and the trams run until well after midnight and back on again around 5 am. Very noisy. The water pressure is very very low, the hot water is way too hot- when other people are showering at the same time you get scolded by the very hot water. There was no conditioner provided and no body lotion. The shampoo bottle was completely empty on arrival. Those amenities in the pictures I believe are from the deluxe room. We stayed in a studio suite which was spacious. The stairs and halls are filthy with badly stained carpets. We were only there 3 nts and would have moved only for the fact you lose so much time in relocating hotels. The shower was over the bath and so high I needed to virtually climb in and out. If I did want a bath it would have taken a whole day to fill due to the trickle of water pressure. The breakfast was very unappealing so we opted to go out each day. We prearranged an early morning taxi and assistance to help get our bags down the steep flights of stairs. We are in our 60’s & I have a condition where I am unable to lift. The receptionist said she put a note in, but to call reception in the morning just to confirm. When we did/ we were advised no one is available! We nearly killed ourselves getting our bags down- I went to reception to find a man at the desk and he said the call got lost in communication and went through to another of their properties!! I think there are much better properties for this kind of money. I really believe this is a 3 star hotel at most.

What a great stay we had at the Amsterdam Canal Hotel! We loved everything about our stay; from a room with canal view to the cute happy hours with small bites and drinks, it was simply perfect. Also the little terrace on the canals is just something you will always remember. I would recommend everyone to visit this hotel.

Three things stand out in my memory: 1) great view, 2) air conditioned during heat wave, 3) nice breakfast available at hotel (eggs cooked to order). Everywhere in Amsterdam has steep staircases. We were very lucky to get one of maybe 3 rooms on the first floor just off the lobby (my partner doesn't do stairs well). We went on a 2 week cruise afterwards, so we had 4 suitcases, which is less than ideal at this hotel. The room was pretty basic, a bed, an armoire, and a bathroom. Not anyplace to sit but the bed, and only one suitcase stand. But it had a great view of the canal behind the hotel. The bathroom had a shower, a toilet, and a sink with almost no counter space. It was functional, but not someplace you would want to hang out. We found the location very handy. Google maps will show you the walking times - and the city is flat - no hills are involved. We walked to the Rijksmuseum in 10 minutes, the Anne Frank House in half an hour, and Rembrant Square in 15 minutes. From the square we went to Central Station and on the ferry over to the A'dam lookout. Then we took the subway back from Central Station to the stop about 5 minutes away from the Hotel. Using the credit card to get on and off the subway it was maybe $1.80 US for each of us.
