In anticipation of our road trip through the Gold Rush country, we decided in advance to spend a night in the Sutter Creek/Amador City area (towns are five minutes from each other) and chose the Imperial Hotel for an authentic old Gold Rush building. We reserved two connecting rooms and that part was fine. Be forewarned that one has to climb a long and steep set of stairs so if mobility is an issue, this is not the place for you. A young man was summoned to help us with our suitcases. As for the rooms themselves, "quaint" would be an accurate adjective. They have added a/c which in the summer is necessary but I had some difficulty getting ours to work properly; had to call one of the owners after hours -- to her credit, she walked me through the necessary steps to make sure it was working well for us. It has been a long time since I have stayed in a hotel room without a phone or TV (!) but we didn't miss it -- just be sure to have a cell phone with you. The young woman who checked us in (and waited on us at dinner) was most pleasant. I will write a separate review of the restaurant. In the morning, I discovered that our toilet was clogged -- there was exactly one staff member on duty -- working the kitchen and dining room but she ultimately located a plunger which I used to solve the problem. In short, this is not a full service establishment.

We have stayed 3 times over the years, this last time Sept 2018 for 2 nights, the staff is wonderful, the food was good, However, the condition of the hotel is very poor, the upkeep not good. The new owner needs to paint, repair, CLEAN it. The room number 2 was filthy dirty, had cobwebs the windows were filthy with hand prints, just needs an over haul , the stairs leading to the 2nd story (where the rooms are) has spider webs and the carpet is not clean, not even vacuumed. We were very disappointed in the condition of the hotel. We will not be going back.

We arrived with high hopes and excited to rent one of their suites which is located off site. It was the honeymoon suite that we wanted to rent for our 25th wedding anniversary. It was a huge disappointment. The place was unkept, dirty, dingy, had a musty smell and we were just really sad it wasn't more special. The food in the restaurant was good. I would eat there again I just felt like the whole place needed to be better kept. Super HOT at night and the air conditioner in the suite didn't work either. Overall disappointed and we will NOT go back!

Kinda felt a bit ripped off leaving here...Paid nearly $170 for a dark hole up the hill on the other side of town with no internet or tv...Stayed at the main building many times and never even knew they had a separate building...Amador City is a pretty town and The Imperial Hotel has lots of charm. Just don't stay in the Suites, you don't get the full experience of the hotel. especially number 9.

Pretentious meets incompetence meets generally confused. The evolution of the Imperial since the new owners has been one of the strangest, yet saddest attempts at a restaurant and bar I have patronized in Amador County. The general pretentious vibe is met with an eclectically strange and overpriced menu that leads to confusion as to why your bill was so high from mediocre food and drinks. The incompetence of the “new to restaurant” owners, is on full display with decisions made in regard to hours of operations, or generally catering the local community. Local nights which use to consist of drink specials and local music have been diminished to locals heading over the hill to Sutter Creek, Plymouth and Jackson where locals can congregate and socialize with the community including restaurant owners. Interesting to note as well, this is the same owner who financially backs the failing Break Even Brewery up the road. Common themes being noticed? My hope as is most of the communities is that when this confused business inevitably goes under soon, someone will come in with a stronger understanding of what a restaurant in the community should be, which believe it or not, you can drive tourism and serve locals simultaneously. The final straw with this place is the fact they stood against “Dancing in the Streets”, a tradition in the community for the past decade. Completely anti community, and this places deserves to be avoided.

What a completely awesome place. The rooms are very well done, and up to date. Nothing but the best is what you'll find. The other big benefit is the numerous wineries in the region, and the restaurant they have that is spectacular. Perhaps a bit pricey, but definitely worth it.
