Below the hotel is a restaurant and bar, bustling with people coming and going. There are not many rooms above, simple decoration and furniture. Waiters are actually restaurant waiters. The fly in the ointment is that the heating and hot water are very slow to come up, and the room is very cold. But the room is really cheap, and you can hear the bells in the distance, which is worth the money.

We ate dinner here on a Friday night which was lovely, (this is the second time we have eaten here when we have been visiting Alnwick) it is good home cooked food. There is a Good selection of beers for my husband. The staff are Friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a good home cooked meal. The portions are substantial as well. I would also recommend booking as it does get busy.

My wife and I stayed for one monday night. On arrival we were showed personaly to our room by the barman. The room was smallish but adequate with a neat on suite, tea and coffee and a modern tv with freeview and very clean. In the evening we were glad that we had been advised to book for a meal because it was busy. The menu was varied, the service was very good and the food was ample and tasty. We had our dog with us and she was well accepted by all and allowed to sleep in our room. After departure I realised that I had left something in our room and it was posted to our home ddress and refused repayment for the postage. Friendly staff, very clean, dog friendly I would recommend this lovely pub in the town center to anyone.

Best Sunday lunch. It was my brothers birthday and he asked for recommendations in Alnwick as if was a mid way point between him and his wife in Durham and their son and wife in Tranent for Sunday lunch along with other family members . Well this place was fantastic lovely cosy bar area with plenty of room. We were a table of 10 with one high chair and a dog. The staff were so welcoming nothing was a problem, the roast sirloin was to die for and there was a great selection of vegetables, roast and mashed potato, swede, carrots, peas, cauliflower cheese and red cabbage, also the most enormous Yorkshire pudding and plenty of gravy with an extra jug also supplied, others had the pork, ham and brisket all of which were delicious. We also had two very young children who had the junior chicken portions which were huge but they more or less demolished them. Everything was perfect, a big thank you to the chef, waiting staff and bar staff, we will be back

Mixed feelings, Absolutely fantastic fabulishiius food, very tasty..the chef gets 5 stars, same to Michael serving us and making us feel very welcome. Stayed the night aswell but the room is very very tired and dirty. The hallway and stairs to the room smell disgusting like wet dawg..there is an air freshener placed but it’s empty?! I would eat there again, no doubt , but stay overnight , absolutely never !

Looked ok on the photos, but this place needs a good clean. Bedding, towels and bathroom was clean, but the floors throughout needed a good hoover, and more care needed cleaning surfaces. Decent in room coffee and snacks, quiet as well considering it’s above the pub. Staff friendly too. Wanted to like it more.

My husband Gaz and I are doing a two night stopover at Alnwick before heading further up north. We wandered around looking for somewhere to enjoy a decent cask ale and decided on the Market Tavern. Lovely warm friendly welcome from Michael, and we got seated and enjoyed a couple of tasty drinks. We witnessed lots of delicious platefuls of food being served and decided to book a table for this evening - so glad we did, food delicious and lots of hungry folk had to be turned away as it was fully booked. Despite it being busy we weren’t rushed, the food was yum as was the beer and Michael was the perfect host. I had the delicious Shepherds Pie and Gaz had the slow braised brisket which he too said was great Would be a shame if you were in Alnwick and missed out on this gem, book ahead if you can to avoid disappointment

Lovely, welcoming staff made us feel at home in the tavern for lunch after church on a Sunday. Ample portions, quite a variety of dishes served. Roast beef was succulent; cauliflower cheese was a hit! Stop by any time for a beer or cocktail - try “Harry’s Dark and Stormy”, a grog to please the masses! Arrrgh!
