The Whittling House

Visited last night as the sister restaurant had been recommended but didn’t have any availability. We really weren’t disappointed. Greeted by very friendly staff who were very attentive. Had the Chowder, Pork Belly Bite and Gyro’s for starters - all of which were piping hot and delicious. For mains we went for the Sea Bass, Haddock & Chips, and the Chicken Burger. Again, all were piping hot, really nicely presented, and tasted delicious. Only complaint would be the food was so good that we couldn’t manage desserts which was a shame because the choice looked amazing. However my daughter was desperate to try the Apple Tart and the very friendly waitress did her a take away portion. All in all a very pleasant experience and would definitely go back next time we’re in the area.

The reviews I read previously were more or less accurate. The room was small and very difficult due to having to navigate three steps from the bed to the toilet. There was a terrible smell in the room which we thought were the drains. I developed an allergic reaction and couldn't stop sneezing for days after. I suspect this was caused by cleaning products used to disguise the awful smell. On the first evening I ordered monkfish which I was unable to eat. It smelt very strong and was under cooked. I've never returned food before but had to confess that I couldn't eat it when asked how the meal was. I was offered another meal of fish and chips but was told very sternly and loudly that I would have to pay for both meals. In the end we weren't charged for the meal, but at the time I felt very embarrassed by the whole incident. I have eaten monkfish twice since without an issue. Parking was difficult but we were there during an arts festival.

I have tried all day to book DB&B at this hotel. I have been misled by several people, let down by their website and eventually stonewalled by their General Manager. She wanted an extra 50 pounds over the price they quoted three hours earlier. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.

This place is adorable! The staff was wonderful, friendly and informative. The food was fabulous, dinner and the included breakfast. Comfortable beds and good bathrooms. Would definitely recommend.

This was a second visit to the restaurant and was very disappointing, we had no dogs but were surrounded by them! We were not offered a seat in another area, it was obviously chosen by the waitress for her convenience as it was in a "corridor" part of the dining area on the way to the kitchen. Two courses, starter and mains were delivered at the same time. We thought that the food and service was average and wines over priced.
