As the American granddaughter of immigrants from Agrigento, I was excited to stay at Baia di Ulisse for 2 nights in July, 2024. Although the hotel was spotless and comfortable, with a nice pool and lovely beach access, customer service was very disappointing. I’m specifically referring to the hotel’s response when I fell ill on the 2nd evening of my stay. After an extremely hot day visiting the Valley of the Temples and my grandparents’ village, I returned to my room, showered, and rapidly began to feel sick. After I had an episode of vomiting, my travel companion (also a hotel guest) went to ask the front desk for some bread to bring to me to settle my stomach. Unfortunately, the staff member at the front desk refused to allow my travel companion to bring a slice of bread to me in my room, stating that the hotel was a resort that didn’t permit food or drink of any sort in the guest rooms due to hygiene rules. And they were unwilling to make an exception to accommodate a sick guest. Instead, this employee offered that I could eat bread outside at the swimming pool deck tables next to the bar, where it was extremely hot, sunny, and uncomfortable. At that point, I was resting in the bed. In my weak, overheated, sick condition, I was in no shape to return to the outdoors for some bread. My experience showed the hotel’s lack of concern or compassion for me as a hotel guest. The hotel also did not check in with me later at any point to see how I was doing or offer any support, which would have been responsible and a really nice touch. As for the hotel food, the bread and fresh fish at dinner my first night were enjoyable and good quality, although the pastries at breakfast were dry and not the traditional Sicilian pastries that are so beautiful and appealing. After returning to the US, I emailed the hotel manager respectfully describing my experience. I did not receive a reply or acknowledgement of any kind. I could not highly recommend this hotel knowing that it doesn’t show concern for or take care of its guests in such circumstances as mine.
