Beautiful location overlooking the river. Excellent service. Fantastic meals. Onsen/baths are good. Beds were a little uncomfortable - the futons were a little thin, and the pillows were very uncomfortable - like bags of beads.

The staff really went above and beyond to make two ignorant Canadian tourists feel extremely welcome at a traditional Japanese Ryuken. Though there was a small language barrier, we never felt that we could not communicate our needs. The hot and cold onsen was very refreshing after walking post towns along the Nakasendo Way. The river next to the hotel made for a relaxing experience and deep sleep. Somehow, I missed the option when booking to select the dinner option, there is really no other food options in the area, and the clerk (owner) said he would put a 'simple meal' together for us for a small charge which we found acceptable. The kaiseki that followed was some of the best and most authentic Japanese food we experienced in our two weeks in Japan. The woman serving us was an absolute gem and the cat that ran the establishment was adorable. Our room was very comfortable and had a nice sitting area with a view of the river. Only points of contention would be that that it's a little out of the way if you don't have a car, but is conveniently accessable by bus with ~10 minute walk. The facilities are a little dated, the onsen is discoloured, but I assume that is from the natural minerals. There was a stale smell (smoke) in the rooms which is a bit off-putting to non-smokers. It would appear smoking is allowed in the facility which might be a plus to some.

I visited for a day trip bath. There are two bathtubs in the bathroom with a good view of the red bridge over the Kiso Pier and the river. The temperature of the hot spring bath was about 21 degrees, and the temperature of the heated bath was 40 degrees. It is a hot spring that heats carbon dioxide cold mineral spring with source temperature of 13 degrees. The color of the hot springs seems to change with the seasons and time, but when I visited, the hot springs were dark brown and smelled of iron. Alternating hot and cold baths was very comfortable.

On September 29, 2021, I climbed Mount Ontake on this day. After descending the mountain, I came to Kiso no Kakehashi by car. I came here to enter the nearby San Onsen. My legs are worn out from climbing Mount Ontake. The Kiso River is beautiful. Kiso Pier was a pier woven from wisteria vines over what was said to be the most difficult part of Nakasendo. In other words, I completely misunderstood the scaffolding on the rock wall, not the red bridge (bitter smile). It is considered one of the three most unusual bridges in Japan. It must have been difficult to pass along the steep river banks with rocky rocks. explanatory sign. Head to Kakehashi Onsen. Bathing fee is 600 yen. The hot spring is in the place where you went through the passage ahead of the lobby. San Onsen is an iron spring, and it is said that it has been used as "medicinal water". You can enter two types of hot springs and cold springs. Arrived at the bathhouse. I've been to both hot springs and cold springs. The temperature of the hot spring is 13.8 degrees, and it seems to boil this. The open-air bath was closed for a while, so it was only an indoor bath.
